MAT 221 - Elementary Probability and Statistics I - Fall 2020 Syllabus Note: This is the common syllabus for all MAT-221 sections. Key changes to the semester structure due to the pandemic are provided at the top. The rest of the syllabus provides the usual policies. •

Lectures by the course instructor will be done online due to the large lecture size. o This will be done on a video conferencing platform of the instructor’s choice. The videos will then be posted on Blackboard. In addition, supplementary videos might be posted with additional details/examples. o Students will have an option to attend the lecture remotely-synchronously (live) or watch the recording asynchronously at a convenient time later. Weekly Recitations will be done by a graduate student in person considering the smaller size. o At the same time, it will be on a video conferencing platform from the classroom. The videos will be recorded and posted on Blackboard. o The students will have the option to attend the recitation in person, or remotely-synchronously (live), or watch the recording asynchronously at a convenient time later. o If the number of students in a section who plans to be in person exceeds the social distancing room capacity, then the students will be split into two groups and assigned which alternating week they will attend in person. o In the recitation classrooms, University health requirements must be adhered to. This includes social distancing as well as wearing a mask covering the nose and mouth. Attendance Assessments: o For both the lectures and the recitations, the recordings are required to be watched within 36 hours of the video being posted. Blackboard is able to track the access. The attendance will be counted based on this. Based on the recommendation from the academic integrity office, the assessments will be spread through the semester o Keeping up with the course on a regular basis will be the most important part of the assessment. o This includes regularly attending (or watching) the lecture/recitation videos, accessing the course Blackboard page regularly, and completing the HW assigned after each lecture (due within 2-3 days).

Calculator: You will need a calculator to do the computations that will arise throughout the course. No specific calculator is required, but TI 84 or TI 83 graphing calculator is highly recommended. Calculators are not to be shared during exams and quizzes. Exams: There will be two midterm examinations and a cumulative (comprehensive) final exam. All exams, including the final exam, will be administered online. The specifics are to be provided close to each exam. The specific dates of the midterm exams for each section will be decided and announced by the lecture instructor at the beginning of the semester. Final Exam: The final exam will be comprehensive. All students must take the final exam at the scheduled time which will be during the mathematics final exam block on Monday, December 7, 2020. There will be no exceptions, and so you should not make any other plans on Monday, December 7th before 2:30 p.m.. Missed Exams: There will be no make-up exams for any reason. A missed exam will count as a zero unless it is due to a documented religious observance, University-sponsored event, or documented emergency. For religious observances and for University-sponsored events, this documentation must be submitted in advance. For emergencies, you must present documentation from a physician or from the Dean’s Office as soon as possible. In such cases, a missed exam score will be replaced by the score on the corresponding portion of the material on the final exam. Homework: Homework will be done online using Sapling Learning online homework from the textbook publisher. This is part of the Orange Instant Access (OIA) discussed in the textbook section. Details of the HW’s will be announced through Blackboard. Two lowest HW scores will be dropped. Additional HW problems may be assigned occasionally by the lecture instructor. The instructor will clarify whether or not those problems will be collected. See also the additional practice problems listed at the end of this syllabus. MAT-221- Fall 2020 Syllabus

Syracuse University’s Stay Safe Pledge reflects the high value that we, as a university community, place on the well-being of our community members. This pledge defines norms for behavior that will promote community health and well-being. Classroom expectations include the following: wearing a mask that covers the nose and mouth at all times, maintaining a distance of six feet from others, and staying away from class if you feel unwell. Students who do not follow these norms will not be allowed to continue in face-to-face classes; repeated violations will be treated as violations of the Code of Student Conduct and may result in disciplinary action. Students with disabilities. Syracuse University values diversity and inclusion; we are committed to a climate of mutual respect and full participation. There may be aspects of the instruction or design of this course that result in barriers to your inclusion and full participation in this course. I invite any student to meet with me to discuss strategies and/or accommodations (academic adjustments) that may be essential to your success and to collaborate with the Center for Disability Resources (CDR) in this process. If you would like to discuss disability-accommodations or register with CDR, please visit their website at https://disabilityservices.syr.edu. Please call (315) 443-4498 or email [email protected] for more detailed information. CDR is responsible for coordinating disability-related academic accommodations and will work with the student to develop an access plan. Since academic accommodations may require early planning and generally are not provided retroactively, please contact CDR as soon as possible to begin this process. Academic Integrity: Syracuse University’s Academic Integrity Policy reflects the high value that we, as a university community, place on honesty in academic work. The policy defines our expectations for academic honesty and holds students accountable for the integrity of all work they submit. Students should understand that it is their responsibility to learn about course-specific expectations, as well as about university-wide academic integrity expectations. The policy governs appropriate citation and use of sources, the integrity of work submitted in exams and assignments, and the veracity of signatures on attendance sheets and other verification of participation in class activities. The policy also prohibits students from submitting the same work in more than one class without receiving written authorization in advance from both instructors. Under the policy, students found in violation are subject to grade sanctions determined by the course instructor and non-grade sanctions determined by the School or College where the course is offered as described in the Violation and Sanction Classification Rubric. SU students are required to read an online summary of the University’s academic integrity expectations and provide an electronic signature agreeing to abide by them twice a year during pre-term check-in on MySlice. The Violation and Sanction Classification Rubric establishes recommended guidelines for the determination of grade penalties by faculty and instructors, while also giving them discretion to select the grade penalty they believe most suitable, including course failure, regardless of violation level. Any established violation in this course may result in course failure regardless of violation level. For more information and the complete policy, see http://class.syr.edu/academic-integrity/ Religious observances policy. Syracuse University’s Religious Observances Policy recognizes the diversity of faiths represented among the campus community and protects the rights of students, faculty, and staff to observe religious holy days according to their tradition. Under the policy, students are provided an opportunity to make up any examination, study, or work requirements that may be missed due to a religious observance provided they notify their instructors no later than the end of the second week of classes. For fall and spring semesters, an online notification process is available through MySlice (Student Services -> Enrollment -> My Religious Observances) from the first day of class until the end of the second week of class.
