Sexual Orientation
A. A term for people of marginalized gender identities and sexual orientations who are not cisgender and/or heterosexual. This term has a complicated history as a reclaimed slur.

B. Term for someone whose gender identity and sex assigned at birth align. The term is not indicative of gender expression, physical anatomy, or how one is perceived in daily life.

C. A medical term designating a certain combination of gonads, chromosomes, external gender organs, secondary sex characteristics and hormonal balances. Usually subdivided into “male” and “female”.

D. Term used to describe men who are attracted romantically, sexually, and/or emotionally to other men. Can also be used to refer to the LGBTQ community as a whole. E. A socially constructed system of classification that ascribes qualities of masculinity and femininity to people.

F. A person who experiences sexual, romantic, and/or physical attraction for members of all gender identities/expressions. G. The type of sexual, romantic, and/or physical attraction one feels for others, often labeled based on the gender relationship between the person and the people they are to whom they are attracted. H. A person who experiences little or no sexual attraction; they may or may not experience emotional, physical, or romantic attraction. I. Someone who is interested in the opposite sex/gender. J. Term used to describe women who are attracted romantically, sexually, and/or emotionally to other women. K. An umbrella term for persons whose gender identity, gender expression or behavior does not conform to that typically associated with the physical sex assigned at birth. The term is not indicative of gender expression, physical anatomy, or how one is perceived in daily life.

L. Describes a person with a less common combination of hormones, chromosomes, and anatomy that are used to assign sex at birth.

M. A person who experiences sexual and/or emotional attraction to more than one gender. This attraction does not have to be equally split between genders and there may be a preference for one gender over others.

How Can You Get Involved on Campus? Participate in a Safe Zone Workshop. Register for an upcoming workshop to join the network of allies across campus: sc.edu/multicultural Apply to be an OMSA Peer Educator. Peer Educators are student leaders who support Peer and the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs through workshops, presentations, and other events. Attend a QT (Queer Talk) event. LGBTQ and ally students are welcome to attend these monthly discussions on a variety of topics important to Carolina students. Dinner is free! Go to an IRIS meeting to show your support.
Examine your personal feelings about the LGBTQ community. Listen to their stories. Don’t make judgments or assumptions. Watch your non-verbal and verbal communication. Always use the pronouns & name the person wants you to use. Speak up against homophobic/transphobic/heterosexist jokes or remarks. Educate yourself about LGBTQ histories, cultures, and concerns. Be open to discussing LGBTQ issues and current events with friends and students. Understand the resources available on campus and in the community. Remember every member of the LGBTQ community is unique and has their own needs and challenges based on their intersecting identities and backgrounds.
