McDonalds PESTLE: Political: McDonalds have to follow government policies, principles and guidelines throughout every McDonalds store. Whether that being that the UK stores following government guidelines as they can’t allow groups of more than 6 around one table at a time due to government guidelines about the risk of Covid-19 being spread. Or that they follow governmental guidelines for dieting and health within customers but primarily children who they aim their certain products at. Therefore, making sure that their products aren’t too unhealthy for the general customer. Also another way that McDonalds follow governmental guidelines is that they have to follow the evolving public health policies; for instance, in April 2018 a sugar tax was introduced to battle the increasing obesity problem in the UK and it stated that companies should reduce the sugar amounts in their products. This then led to companies reformulating their high sugar brands and avoiding the increase of money for the sugar that they use. Overall this then decreased the intake of sugar from McDonalds customers which hand in hand decreased the amount of obese people in the UK. Economical: McDonalds concentrates on the economical side considerably as they take into consideration their exports and imports of certain products; for instance, a small percentage of the beef McDonalds uses in its US restaurants is imported from Australia and New Zealand. Also McDonalds would be either positively or negatively impacted when the economy of the country they are in is increasing or decreasing. For instance, in the UK as of 2020 due to Covid-19 the UK has gone into a recession. As a result of the recession the GDP (Gross Domestic Product) increased. Meaning that the value of goods that McDonalds sell are decreasing in value. Meaning that McDonalds’ products aren’t worth as much anymore as customers haven’t got as much money to spend on their products. Which means that McDonalds will either have to do two things sell their products at the same price and less people buying them or selling their products at a reduced price. Therefore, meaning that no matter which choice it will negatively impact McDonalds as they will be losing revenue. Social: McDonalds takes into consideration the buying habits and trends of customers and people in general. By doing this they can access their required targeted demographic. This will lead to the business being able to increase their sales and the revenue they make as a result. They Would look at the amount of money on average a person spends on their products, what sort of products that they buy on a regular basis and what age range normally buys a certain product. With this data McDonalds can target those specific people and will thrive in the fast food market. Technological: McDonalds leads the fast food market when it comes to technological advances as they use EZlink payment over counter and credit card payment for online and phone ordering. They offer free Wi-fi connection at all McDonald’s branches and many other valuable services. By doing this they can be ahead of their competition and offer things to their customers that the other fast food chains are not. Therefore, as a result of this they can make a healthy profit and then re-invest their money into bettering their business.

Legal: McDonalds follow legal responsibilities by making sure they respect human rights, they believe in equality, diversity and follow data protection laws. As they are respectful of everyone that works in their premises no matter their age, gender, race or religion. As well as anyone that buys from them. They also make sure that they can’t give out customers’ personal details to 3rd party companies without their consent therefore making sure that the customer is as safe as possible. McDonalds also follow the law as they followed the evolving public health policies; for instance, in April 2018 a sugar tax was introduced to battle the increasing obesity problem in the UK and it stated that companies should reduce the sugar amounts in their products. So McDonalds complied. Environmental: To deal with global warming and the alarming rates of plastic levels in oceans McDonalds cut down on their packaging waste issue. As McDonalds redesigned it’s packaging with more sustainable and more recyclable materials. For example in 2013, US restaurants stopped using polystyrene coffee cups and replaced them with paper-based cups. Also to deal with global warming McDonalds made efforts to reduce its impact on deforestation and carbon emission. As they stated that they wouldn’t buy soya that is grown in the Amazon Rainforest. They also did this by using energy- efficient equipment and low- energy lights in its restaurants. Ethics: McDonalds ethics are shared between all legal, environmental and political ways of thinking. As they believe in equality, diversity and caring about the people they employ and look after. In addition, they also look after and care about the environment and trying to think morally how to make money but to not harm the planet at the same time. As they also take part in Fair-trade and source their ingredients (cocoa beans) from Fair-trade farmers....
