Claire Browning Professor Davis UCCA 102 3 May 2017 Media Analysis Outline Media Analysis Outline 1. Introduction: a. PSA i. Sandy Hook Promise ii. Evan 2. Monroe’s Motivated Sequence: a. Get Attention i. Honestly, the PSA didn’t grab my attention until the gun cocked. ii. Usually, ads and PSAs try to grab your attention very first thing. b. Establish a Need: i. There isn’t really a need to establish here. ii. Since the video is a public service announcement, there is no product being sold. c. Purpose: i. Persuade people to take action against gun violence. d. Satisfy the Need: i. Again, there is no product being sold, but the PSA does provide a resource to help the audience learn how to prevent gun violence. e. Visualize the Future: i. It is more of an implied visualization. If nothing is done about school shootings and gun violence, there will be more in the future. f. Action: i. Go to the website and learn how to know the signs of gun violence and prevent school shootings. 3. Ethos/Pathos/Logos: a. Pretty much mostly pathos i. Little bit of ethos in that the Sandy Hook Promise organization is a nonprofit, so people are more willing to get involved ii. Little bit of logos in that it’s logical to want to stop school shootings unless you’re a sociopath… b. Pathos i. You are really rooting for Evan to get his girl ii. All the sudden everything changes to a school shooting. iii. You’re emotionally connected to Evan and don’t want anything to happen to him.

iv. Also, school shootings are emotional in general v. On top of that, seeing the shooter’s signs on the second go-round makes you feel irresponsible and guilty and like it’d be easy to stop the shooting had you just paid attention. 4. Rhetorical Triangle: a. Vague… b. Speaker i. There isn’t a speaker, just the purpose to prevent school shootings c. Audience i. The audience is literally everyone. 1. Everyone pay attention d. Message i. The message is to stop school shootings and to pay attention 5. Logical Fallacies: a. I didn’t see any logical fallacies except maybe generalizing that all school shooters show that many signs of being volatile 6. Overall Effectiveness: a. To me, this PSA was extremely effective. b. It appeals heavily to pathos. c. It effectively breaks the rules of grabbing your attention, which makes it stand out and grab your attention that much more....
