2 Social Media Analysis Twitter is a social media communication app used to find and share stories about today’s biggest news and events, you can follow friends, celebrities, or companies. In 2006 when twitter started it was imagined to be used as an SMS app. It was meant to be texting but not. Now, twitter has about 9% of the worlds overall social media users. The purpose of this paper is to provide information on the social media app Twitter and discuss the key features and elements that are apart of the communication on this platform. Key Features Twitter allows user to post whatever content they want with minimal restrictions. This lets people across the world share their views and interests with other Twitter users. Twitter provides services for family, friends, and coworkers to communicate through messaging. Through these messages you can share tweets made by other users. These direct messages can be sent to people other than users who follow you. You can message celebrities or CEOs and say whatever you feel. This provides more options to communicate with others on the Twitter app. A “Tweet” is the main use of twitter, tweeting something is making a post on the twitter app. Being able to do this with little restriction makes twitter an open app to post whatever you want. Another key feature of Twitter is being able to share media in different forms such as posting photos, videos, and links. When you post or “tweet” something you can retweet, comment, or heart the tweet. You can also share the tweet to people who don’t have twitter on different medias such as iMessage. These features help people to share their views and ether agree or disagree with people on the platform. This gives people an opportunity to reply with their opinions and responses on what you tweet or retweet to your personal feed. This gives people the opportunity to hear others and have the chance to inform or get informed by other users. Another key feature

3 is tweet threads which is like comments and responses on a post. This allows a person to provide an update or additional context on a tweet by connecting the tweets together. This provides another way to communicate something to other users and let users see what you post. The last key feature is the trending tab on twitter. This allows users to see what posts and topics are trending most on the app. People can tap on the event and topic and will only see tweets about that topic and event which helps people to only focus on the event they chose to read about. Media Theories Not everything you see on Twitter is always true or the best way to get information. Since any user can post what they want when they want it is a sure fact that somewhere along the lines false information will be spread. This leads to the possibility of framing events on things that media outlets find more important than others. Framing Theory is “taking a few key elements of a situation and putting them together in a way that suggests a specific narrative. Frames can be viewed as ways people organize ideas or principles that are shared by society. Framing has the ability to create, influence, and shape people's perceptions of events.” (Gimbal 2016) This is very clear to see on twitter. Accounts with big following such as news outlets or even celebrities can share what they feel is important and this has the power to make their following, which can consist of millions, feel as if they must have the same view as their favorite celebrity or it can change people’s views on topics depending on what news source they trust. This can be dangerous because there may be information that is spreading, and it can be talked about in a certain way to change the true story. It is important to not just get information from social media but to read around. Look at different apps or even news sources to see what other people are talking about these topics. “Goffman argued that when the mass media tells the story

4 of a particular event, the way in which the story is told provides a framework for how the event should be interpreted.” (Gimbal 2016) Conclusion Twitter is a great way for people to share events and topics in many ways. Twitter also gives users the chance to express how they feel about topics based on the posts they like or the people they follow. Twitter also gives everyone on the platform a way to share what they want on the app which can range from political opinions to promoting your own brand. Twitter has become a main news source for many and has different ways for users to communicate throughout the app. Overall twitter is a great social media app that works for everyone of all backgrounds to use and share what they feel.
