Psychology in the Media Due: Sunday November 22, 2020 11:00 PM (Pacific Daylight Time)

Assignment description As discussed in Module 2 one of the characteristics of psychological research is that the results of the research are public. As such, not only are the results of empirical studies published in journals and books and presented at conferences they also frequently appear in the media. Perhaps not surprisingly however, the results of published research are often misrepresented/misinterpretted in such media reports (c.f., Woolston, 2015). For this assignment you will need to find a recent (i.e., published in the last 10 years) media report of some psychological study that interests you and that covers a topic that is relevant to Psyc 100 content. (One place to look is the APA’s Psychology news portal).) Read through the article and ensure that it describes the results of recent (again published with in the last 10 years) psychological study. Also, make sure that the article provides you with sufficient information so that you can identify and locate the original study that is summarized. Next, you will need to obtain a copy of the original study. You can do this (for most studies) by using one of the following options available through SFU's library. if you know the journal and issue in which the article appeared you can most likley obtain a copy by clicking on the A-Z link from the library home page and searching for the journal if you know the author and year for the article you can most likley obtain a copy searching PsycINFO in the Article databse link from the library home page Once you've obtained copies of BOTH the media report and the original article you need to read both and reflect on whether the report provided in the media is an accurate reflection of the findings reported in the original study.

Having done this you can now proceed to complete the questions presented below to complete your assignment. Woolston, C. (2015). Scientist criticizes media portrayal of research. Nature, 523, 505 (30 July 2015) doi:10.1038/523505f
