PURPOSE OF MEDICATION
Expected Pharmacological Action suppress inflammation and the normal immune response; management of adrenocortical insuffiency
Therapeutic Use enhance fetal lung maturity and surfactant production in fetus between 24-34 weeks gestation; short term administration before delivery to high risk mom to prevent
Complications adverse reactions and side effects are common with high doe therapy and long term use, SOB, crackles, chest pain
Contraindications/Precautions Lactation- avoid chronic use; administration of live virus vaccines! OB- safety not established yet Caution- neonates avoid use of benzyl alcohol containing injectable preparations; use preservative free preparations
Interactions insulin, oral hypoglycemic agents, loop diuretics, thiazide, NSAIDS,
Medication Administration deep IM- ventreal gluteal, vastus lateralis muscle! shouldnt be used if need rapid results
Nursing Interventions administer 12mg IM for two doses 24 hour apart; give 24 hr but not more than 7 days before delivery. monitor for maternal hyperglycemia, assess the preterm infant lung sounds, shake suspension well
