§ Kicks food into room § Just one sweep with broom to clean and dips out § Room: filthy Gregor positioned himself in filthy corner to make something of a protest Grete and mother realized how dirty Gregor's room was ○ Mother cleaned room with just few buckets of water ○ Dampness made Gregor sick and immobile Grete: cried because of condition of Gregor's room ○ Father: it's not mother's responsibility to clean for Gregor's room ○ Told sister: "she would no longer be allowed to clean Gregor's room ever again" ○ Gregor: hissed at all this New cleaning lady wasn't scared of Gregor She would call him "old dung beetle" ○ "One day… when cleaning woman started up once again with her usual conversation, Gregor was so bitter that he turned towards her, as if for an attack, although slowly and weakly… instead of being afraid… cleaning woman merely lifted up a chair standing close by the door and, as she stood there with he rmouth wide open, her inention was clear: she would close her mouth only when the chair in her hand had been thrown down on Gregor's back." Gregor never ate anymore ○ Held food in mouth, when given to him, and spat it out ○ He thought it was because he was sad but realized it was all the alterations in his room All the items ended up in Gregor's room (stuff that nobody wanted and couldn't sell out)

• Out of nowhere, after no sound of it, violin started playing ○ Room became more comfortable and cheerful • Gregor carted around with him dust, threads, hair, remnants of food on his back and sides • "For him [Gregor] it was as if the way to the unknown nourishment he craved was revealing itself to him. He was determined to press forward right to his sister, to tug at her dress and to indicate to her in this way that she might still come with her violin into his room, because here no one valued the recital as he wanted to value it." • He wanted to keep his sister in his room and he intended to keep her there with fear (using his appearance) • One of the lodgers pointed at Gregor ○ He entertained the lodgers more than the violin • Lodger: "considering the disgraceful conditions prevailing in this apartment and family… I immediately cancel my room. I will, of course, pay nothing at all for the days which I have lived here; on the contrary I shall think about whether or not I will initiate some sort of action against you, something which… will be very easy to establish." • Grete: "You must try to get rid of the idea that this is Gregor. The fact that we have believed for so long ,that is truly our real misfortune. But how can it be Gregor? If it were Gregor, he would have long ago realized that a communal life among human beings is not possible with such an animal and would have gone away voluntarily. Then we would not have a brother, but we could go on living and honour his memory. But this animal plagues us. It drives away the lodgers, will obviously tak eover the entire apartment, and leave us to spend the night in the alley. Just look, father… he's already starting up again." 9pg. 69) • She ran behind father leaving mother as if she were sacrificing her and father raised his arms in front of Grete as if he were protector her

his arms in front of Grete as if he were protector her Gregor didn't want to create all these problems especially for Grete ○ He felt bad so he took every effort despite pain to turn away and leave them ○ Everyone seemed to understand his good intnetions ○ "they looked at him in silence and sorrow" "he hardly paid any attention to the fact that no word or cry from his family interrupted him" "only when he was already in the door did he turn his head… he still saw that behind him nothing had changed. Only the sister was standing up… mother… was now completely asleep. Hardly was he inside his room when the door was pushed shut very quickly, bolted fast, and barred." "… sister who had been in such a hurry. She had stood up right away, had waited, and had then sprung forward nimbly… she cried out "Finally!!"… as she turned the key in the lock Gregor couldn't move at all due to pain ○ Became weaker gradually ○ Rotten apple in his back inflated surrounding area ○ He remembered his family with deep feeling and love At 3 AM: "then without willing it, his head sank all the way down, and from his nostrils flowed out weakly out his last breath." Father: "Now we can give thanks to God" ○ After finding out Gregor died Grete: "look how thin he was. He had eaten nothing for such a long time. The meals which came in here came out again exactly the same." Father kicked out the 3 lodgers "Now they wanted to rent an apartment smaller and cheaper but better situated and generally more practical than the present one, which Gregor had found." "and it was something of a confirmation of their new dreams and good intentions

when at the end of their journey the daughter first lifted herself up and stretched her young body" ------ end...
