Description

Josh Turner LIT 205 Section 07 13 September 2018 “Schizophrenia” Jim Stevens, “The Joy of Cooking” Elaine Magarell, and “Dusting” Julia Alvarez Summary The poem “Schizophrenia,” by Jim Stevens, tells the reader about a very messy family who has difficult lives and has trouble getting along. The poem tells us of all the things wrong with the house due to the family’s problems. Things such as unwashed dishes and broken windows are mentioned in this poem. “The Joy of Cooking,” by poet Elaine Magarell, is about a sister who is cooking her sister’s tongue and her brother’s heart. The poem takes on a very bitter tone as it describes the preparation of each of the dishes. Though the poem may be more figurative and metaphorical than literal, it is still hard to distinguish which of these it is. The poem “Dusting” written by Julia Alvarez is told from the perspective of a child. The child talks about how they would always write their name in the dust on the cabinet only for their mother to come by and clean the dust, erasing the name. As a child, they do not see the real reason to dusting. Response The three poems “Schizophrenia” by Jim Stevens, “The Joy of Cooking” by Elaine Magarell, and “Dusting” by Julia Alvarez, not only could link to each other, but also link to also works of literature and things in my personal life. All of these poems are similar and have a connection since they all deal with family life and struggles. I believe that the poems “The Joy of Cooking” and “Schizophrenia” especially link together because they both talk about family

conflicts. The family in “The Joy of Cooking” could be the family that lives in the house described in “Schizophrenia.” We can tell that the family in “The Joy of Cooking” seems to not have an excellent relationship with one another as one of the daughters is cooking her sister’s tongue and her brother’s heart. This bad relationship most likely lead to many fights which could have caused damage to the house found in “Schizophrenia. Though these two stories link to each other, they also link to other things outside of the poems. The house in “Schizophrenia” could have been the house in the play “Fences.” We know from the play that the family did not always get along very well. “Schizophrenia” also links to the theory that someone’s lifestyle could decrease the value of their home when it comes time for them to sell it. “Schizophrenia” is a perfect example of this as the family’s poor lifestyle has taken its toll on the home and its value. “The Joy of Cooking” links to my life in the fact that I have very close friends that do not get along very well with their siblings. In fact, they have terrible relationships with one another. One could even link the dark tone of this poem to the tone of “Story of an Hour” both talk about bad relationships and hold a dark bitter tone. The third poem “Dusting” may not link as well to the two other poems, but still links to other subjects. “Dusting” links very well to the views of children. The child in the poem just wants to leave her mark by writing her name in the dust on a cabinet and then does not understand when her mother comes by, just to wipe it away. Children want to be heard and noticed in a world of grown-ups. This poem also links to children’s innocence as they do not always know the meaning of chores such as dusting. The child in the poem seems to be very innocent. Though these poems all link family life, the also link to other subjects such as relationships and taking care of your home....
