POSITIVE EMOTIONS Positive Emotions (all of these emotions are individuality being studied): - Joy - Gratitude - Serenity - Interest - Awe - Affection - Etc Lawyers rank among white collar professionals: - #1 highest earners - #1 in nicotine abuse - #1 in alcoholism Are doctors happy? - Earn a high salary - However many state they wished they chose a different profession - Article to take note: - “The Woes of Wall Street: Why Young Bankers Are so Miserable” - Financial professional: - Worked > 80 per week --- year 1 = 100% Year 9 = 94% - Neglected hobbies & outside interest ---- year 1 - Neglected family and friends This idea: success → happiness IS WRONG However: success ← happiness “I am successful wealthy and connected because I am happy” - richard branson Positive emotions in school: - Improved memory - Better at reactive problem solving - Answer more questions - Answer higher percentage correctly - Perceived as more appealing Learning-related emotions:

What is an emotion anyway? - A relatively brief conscious experience characterized by mental activity and a degree of pleasure or displeasure The Pittsburgh Common Cold Study - Is positive or negative affect associated with susceptibility to colds? - If you have a positive emotional style: less likely to have the cold - If you have a negative emotional style: more likely to have a cold - HOWEVER (look at the slides) The Nun Study: - Age 85: - 90% of most cheerful quartile alive; - 34% of least cheerful quartile alive - Age 94: - 54% of most cheerful quartile alive; - 11% of least cheerful quartile alive - Only positive feelings predicted longevity See tiger→ feel fear→ run→ survive See tiger→ spend a few seconds thinking dispassionately→ get eaten ^^^ negative emotions are important Real life example: wearing masks→ feel fear→ don’t get covid Negativity Bias: - We tend to remember negative events longer and feel more horrible about them than positive events We “attend to, learn from, and use negative information far more than positive information” (Vaish et al., 2008) - We need more positive events and positive interactions than negative events Narrow and Constrict vs Broaden and build - A platform of positive emotions at can be built on - “Positive emotions broaden people’s ideas about possible actions, opening their awareness to wider ranges of thoughts and actions than are typical for them” Positive emotions in Business: - Patagonia - Google - Yahoo (bring your dog to work)

What can YOU do to increase positive emotions? - Keeping a gratitude journal - Keep notes of what I am grateful for - It works as it pre programmed your brain to think positively again - Encouraging strengths - Direct pathway to engagement - Significant raise of positive emotions - Breathing practices - Three mins/ 2x a day - Focus on breath - Daily time for others - A powerful way to raise our positive emotions - Intentionally texting someone you care about: “i am so grateful to have you as a friend”...
