Badminton History of Badminton BADMINTON - racquet sport played by two opposing players (singles) or by two opposing pairs (doubles) - originated in India in the mid-1800s - it was known as Poona (Pune) - its name is from the hometown of Duke of Beaufort in Gloucestershire, England - 1879 = Bath Badminton Club - 1893 = Badminton Association of England - 1934 = International Badminton Federation founding members: - Canada - Netherlands - Denmark - Ireland - France - New Zealand - England - Wales - 1936 = India joined IBF - BWF = Badminton World Federation - The Thomas and Uber Cup = one of the most prominent badminton tournament in the world BADMINTON RACKET - frame shall not exceed 680mm in length and 230mm in width - weight = 3.5 to 5 oz. - rackets frame: - Isometric shape = enlarge sweet spot = more power - Oval shape = more playing area = concentrated sweet spot SHUTTLECOCK - made of natural and/or synthetic materials - other name: bird or birdie - feathered shuttle = shall have 16 feathers = length: 62-70mm = circle: 58-68mm = base: 25-28mm = weight: 4.74 to 5.50 grams - non-feathered/synthetic shuttle = skirt or simulation of feathers in synthetic materials, shall replace natural feathers = base: 25-28mm = measurements and weight shall be the same as feathered shuttle TYPES OF GRIP - forehand grip - backhand grip SERVE - to put the shuttlecock in play at the start of the rally - shuttle shall be below the server’s waist at the instant of being hit by the server’s racket - types of serve: - forehand serve - backhand serve - drive serve - flick serve RECEIVING TECHNIQUES - offensive stance - defensive stance FUNDAMENTAL SKILLS - Serve - Net Shot - Return/Receive - Drive - Smash - Lob Shot = overhead - Drop Shot - Clear Shot = underhand SCORING SYSTEM - match = consist of best of 3 games - game = won by the side which first scores 21 pts.

- if score becomes 29-all, side scoring the 30th point wins - side winning the game shall serve first in the next game START OF PLAY - toss = shall be conducted before the game = side winning the toss will choose who to serve or receive first and/or to start the play at one end of the court or the other = loser of the toss shall exercise the remaining choice OFFICIALS Referee – overall manager/technical official of the tournament Umpire – obtains the score sheet, ensures the scoring device is working, - facilitates the game or match with fair judging and its decision is final Service Judge – responsible for judging that the server delivers a correct service Line Judges – responsible for the line/s assigned except when the umpire overrule the call, if beyond reasonable doubt HAND SIGNALS - in - out EVENTS IN BADMINTON - Singles = Men/Women - Doubles = Men/Women - Mixed Doubles – Men and Women TERMINOLOGIES Ace – a point, a score Bird – shuttlecock Baseline – back boundary line in each end of the court, parallel to the net Center Line – line perpendicular to net; separates left and right service courts Clear – shot hit deep to the opponents back boundary line Drive – fast & low shot that makes a horizontal flight Drop – shot hit softly and with finesse to fall rapidly and close to the opponent’s net side Fault – violation of playing rules (serving, receiving or during play Flick – quick wrist & forearm rotation Kill – fast downward shot that cannot be returned Let – legitimate cessation of play to allow a rally to be replayed Love – no score, zero Long Service Line – in singles, the back boundary line. In doubles, a line 2 ½ feet inside the back boundary line Match – a series of games to determine a winner Net Shot – shot hit from the forecourt that just clear the net and then falls rapidly Rally – exchange of shots while shuttle is in play Serve – put the shuttlecock in play at the start of rally Smash – shot hit with power and speed downward to your opponent’s court
