imitations of what they see in their environment such as the swaying of trees and the motion of animals. way of behaving, thinking or doing something



Originated from Bukidnon in Northern east Mindanao. Dancers perform this as an entertainment for the deities to make them feel more comfortable during the fiestas that was organized for them.

Comic Dances Philippine Folkdance 

dance practices that have been passed from one generation to another.



Are those depict funny movement for entertainment.

Kinotan Ethnic Dance 

these dances have been around since the ancient times and were performed even during and after foreign invasion.

Occupational Dance 



Is a comic dance from Ilocos Sur. It depicts the movement of a person bitten by ants.

Makonggo 

are those that depict the action of a particular occupation for example planting and pounding.

Is a dance from Sta. Maria, Bulacan. A solo performer imitates the movement characteristic of a monkey, its gestures and grimaces.

Game Dance Binatbatan Dance 

An occupational dance from Paoay, Ilocos Norte. It depicts the beating of cotton pods to separate the seeds from the fiber with the used of two sticks called Bat-bat in Ilocos.



Those that are done with play elements

Lubi-lubi 

Is a Bicolano dance which is a combination of simple folk and social steps. Originated from Leyte in samar.

Mag-asik Wedding dances  

This is a tiruray dance for girls, performed in Nuro, Cotabato. Mag-asik means to sow seeds. A large handkerchief is spread in the middle of the floor.

Religious/ceremonial Dance 

Dugso

Are those associated with religion, vows and ceremonies. May be performed to drive away evil spirits and for having recovered from sickness, favors granted and vows fulfilled.

Pagkawin 

The festivity open with the Pahanda or presentation of dowry.

Courtship dances 

Sua-sua

Depict the art of courtship



This dance is from Jolo, Sulu. Sua-sua means small orange plant and is also the name of courtship dance and its accompanying song.



Depicts the hunting rituals performed before the tribal war. Idaw means “bird”.

VISAYAS “Live long. Live happy. Die proud.” Festival dances 

Dances performed during the celebration of fiestas

Dances are more upbeat and exciting, not much in drama and tribal meaning as their culture. Maglalatik

Pandanggo sa ilaw  

This dance of lights stimulates fireflies at dusk and at night. A dancer has to balance one lamp on the head and one on the palm of each hand.

War dances



Sayaw sa Bangko 

Sagayan Performed by both Maguindanao and Maranao depicting fierce warriors, would carry a shield with shell noisemakers and double-bladed sword and attempting rolling movement to defend their masters.

LUZON “We shall never forget our heritage”

An indigenous dance from the Philippines in which coconut shell halves are hung onto dancer’s hand and on vest. Originated in Binan, Laguna.

Originates from Pangasinan. Dancers shows their skills in staying up on the bench as they exchange places by moving their way around or the girl is thrown in the air while the boy moves to their other end.

Subli 

Cultural folkdances from this region represents all the different factions and tribal groups in one way to another.

Subsub means falling on one’s head and bali means broken. Performed during fiestas asa ceremonial worship dance to the town’s Ion,, the Holy cross.

MINDANAO “Pride and Honor Mindanao Region” Cordilleran or Igorot Kinikini 

The term or the collective name of several ethnic groups in the Philippines.



Kini means Royal walk. Maranao women perform this dance with the scarves.

Banga Dance Singkil 

Contemporary or Kalinga of the Mountain Province. It shows the strength of the women. Their grace and agility while balancing the heavy pots, sometimes five stack high is the testament of how Filipino strength and determination to survive hardship.

Idaw dance



Takes its name from the bells worn of the ankles of the Muslim princess.

Pangalay



It is a dance that emphasizes the agility of the upper body. Commonly performed at wedding and other social gatherings....
