In this section, you will begin to explore the argument in your chosen artifact. You will uncover the logical structure of the argument. A. Describe the argument made by the article and artifact. The argument made by the article is to note the growth of online education, its demand by college students and its assimilation into modifying the traditional college experience. B.

Identify the key facts, research, or resources the argument is based on. Provide as many examples as possible to support your identification, as this will help you with your final project. The key facts based on the argument are:  Online education dramatically increases the productivity of teaching as it’s now possible for a single professor to teach more students in an afternoon than was previously possible in a lifetime.  Online education leverages the power of the best teachers, allowing them to teach many more students  In an online lecture it pays to be concise. Online, the student is in control and can choose when and what to repeat. The result is a big time-savings as students proceed as fast as their capabilities can take them, repeating only what they need to further their individual understanding.  Online lectures eliminate the fixed time-costs of attending class.

C.

Computer-adaptive learning will be as if every student has their own professor on demand— much more personalized than one professor teaching 500 students or even 50 students. Online education vastly increases the potential for productivity increases because it greatly increases the size of the potential market Educational productivity will also increase with online education because online education is inherently data-rich. Every video watched, every link clicked, every question answered or not answered, all can easily be collected and analyzed. The reality is that more than a third of college students are over the age of 25, nearly half are enrolled part-time, and most are working. Online education hit the radar of the educational elite only recently with the unexpected success of Stanford’s free online course on artificial intelligence. In 2011, even before the rise of MOOCs (massive online open course) , there were 2.75 million online students, 12% of the headcount at degree-granting schools. Private, for-profit universities such as the University of Phoenix and Ashford University were the pioneers of online education. Online education has also been especially successful in the graduate market, particularly for the Master’s degree, which is shorter and pursued by adults less interested in the socializing and mating functions of the traditional college—indeed, today the Master’s degree is already more than 30% online.

Describe the logic and reasoning used to advance the argument. i.

Considering the premises and conclusion, what logic and reasoning is used to advance the argument? As technology advances the market for education has shifted from its traditional setting and the growth of the quality of online education has increased. Virtual learning offers tremendous savings both in terms of money and of time and is being embraced by more universities and professors as students gravitate to online education.

ii.

What questions are left unanswered? Describe any gaps or weaknesses present in the logic and reasoning used to advance the argument. As virtual learning progresses, there must be more clarity on the structure of the online content of the future, how knowledge will be assessed, and how learning will be credentialed. The author did not provide much detail on potential new developments that will enhance virtual learning. I feel this would solidify the argument for the reader to be aware that there will be continuous progress to online education.

Outline for Writing The argument being made by my chosen article/artifact is to provide an insight to the benefits of online education and changes in technology that is providing a greater opportunity for more learning content to be shared and ease of accessibility for both teachers and students. This argument is based on the following key facts, research, and/or resources: online education dramatically increases the productivity of teaching as it’s now possible for a single professor to teach more students in an afternoon than was previously possible in a lifetime; in an online lecture it pays to be concise. Online, the student is in control and can choose when and what to repeat; results of online education show a big time-savings as students proceed as fast as their capabilities can take them, repeating only what they need to further their individual understanding; online education vastly increases the potential for productivity because it greatly increases the size of the potential market. The logic and reasoning used to advance this argument is the analysis of the current educational market and the growth shift to online learning. Considering the premises and conclusion that are advanced in the article, the logic and reasoning used to advance the argument is as technology advances the market for education has shifted from its traditional setting and the growth of the quality of online education has increased. Virtual learning offers tremendous savings both in terms of money and of time and is being embraced by more universities and professors as students gravitate to online education. I have the following questions that are not answered by the article: As virtual learning progresses, what will be the structure of the online content of the future, how knowledge will be assessed, and how will learning be credentialed? Therefore, a gap or weakness in the article is to describe potential new developments that will enhance virtual learning. I feel this would solidify the argument for the reader to be aware that there will be continuous progress to online education....
