Running head: MILESTONE ONE

Social media’s largest impact is the overall increased global connectedness in people. Social media has allowed for people all around the world to see what is going on in another person’s world. While we may have known about other cultures and areas, but social media allowed us to look into these people’s lives and understand how their cultures work and compare to ours. As a result of this, our social practices have changed. From 2010 to 2016 online dating has tripled in the use by 18-24-year-olds. (Smith and Monica, 2016) Prior to that, online dating was hardly ever considered or even used but the increased online presence and increased global connectivity pushed more people to become interested in it. Social media in itself has caused global connectedness but it has also been affected over time by the same global connectedness that it caused. People from different cultures and social backgrounds connecting and learning about each other can be an interesting but dangerous situation. It is common that people from a different culture will not understand all of the practices of your culture. On social media, this translates to an often-toxic environment where cultures and opinions clash. Posts on social media can have millions of commenters, all with different opinions, trying to prove to each other who is the most right in their opinion. Before social media took over our social lives, we only interacted with people who we saw in person. Within the group of people we interacted with, some may have different opinions but they generally stemmed from a similar foundation. When we were exposed to social media, we got to see everyone’s opinions from across the globe.

Global society has effectively changed societal change because of how connected we all are and how much we now understand each other’s culture. Additionally, a lack of understanding of another culture also changed societal change. At this point in our history, the global society directly influences societal change. When something happens overseas that makes the majority of the world angry, they will express that anger on social media. Everyone who feels the same way about the situation will rally together and call for action or change in what’s going on and this triggers a societal change because of our connectedness. This type of societal change is one we are not accustomed to and one we would not have experienced without the global society that we created. The professional field I will be going into is law enforcement, and global connectedness has impacted this profession in a few different ways. With global connectedness, law enforcement has been able to join forces with each other across the globe in order to address crimes that may not be local to one area. Additionally, law enforcement has been able to share ideas with each other to help out and make law enforcement better overall. Unfortunately, global connectedness has come in the form of social media for most and law enforcement has been able to use this to their advantage even while social media continues to be a disadvantage for them. Social media has exposed a lot of policy officers acting unethical but as a result most people on social media view all police officers as being this way. This has caused most police officers to be forced to wear a body camera recording their interactions with citizens. Additionally, this awkward tension between citizens and police officers has been causing officers to act out the way they have been and be almost afraid of citizens because of what they are capable of. On the opposite side, social media has become an information database for

law enforcement, where in the right scenario if law enforcement is looking for information on you they could find it all on social media, they might even happen to find out where you are exactly at this moment through your social media. While it causes tons of problems for law enforcement usually, it can occasionally help out and make surveillance an easier task.
