PURPOSE OF MEDICATION

Expected Pharmacological Action Polyethylene glycol works as an osmotic agent. Osmotic agents facilitate softer stool and more frequent bowel movements by causing stool to retain water.

Therapeutic Use Laxative- to relieve constipation

Complications Diarrhea, Flatulence, Nausea, Stomach cramps, Swollen abdomen

Contraindications/Precautions Hypersensitivity, bowel obstruction Precautions: may lose viscosity when mixed into starch thickened liquids

Interactions LICORICE and POLYETHYLENE glycol-containing colonoscopy preparations

Medication Administration (17 g, DAILY, PO) -initial: 0.4 g/kg/day orally -maintenance, 0.2 to 0.8 g/kg/day orally -loss of viscosity may occur when mixed into starch-thickened liquidsconsider other thickened liquids

Nursing Interventions -make sure the patient has access to a bathroom or other means of elimination -make sure patient is drinking plenty of fluids -educate patient to report GI irritation or rectal bleeding -contact provider if patient doesn't have a bowel movement after medication -don't use if pt. has signs of fecal impaction (such as going days without a bowel movement and then passing watery stool)

Client Education Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness -Patient reports no constipation or straining with bowel movements and no abdominal pain -Patient has a bowel movement.
