Mise-en-scène worksheet Full name: Caroline Abelgren Michaelsen List the main components of mise-en-scène: Basically mise-en-scéne is the everything that’s on camera. It could be the actors and how they are acting throughout the movie. Mise-en-scéne is a basic building block, because the things that is going on in the movie is very relevant for example: the light in the movie, if a person is dark in their faces, is the person shady or are the person mean, and on the opposite, if there is light on a character’s face, are they hopeful, good or even desperate? It could also be weather, makeup, if the movie is filmed inside or outside, facial expressions and even time of the day.

Write 400 words on mise-en-scène in Moonrise Kingdom. The background music plays a big role in this feature, there is opera music when the boy scout leader tells the boy that he is sorry for the boing being an orphan, they both fold their hands and somehow they avoid contact, which indicates it is an awkward situation for both of them. Also they sit almost symmetrical, which means he understands which situation the boy is in, and it is very highlighted that it is symmetrical. The close up on their faces when they get busted by the scouts, her parents and the police officer are slightly surprised and the girl looks angry. Also all of the people stand in line when they get busted, very symmetrical, and Suzy’s father is holding the tent above his head and it looks very empowering. When the girl’s father tells her on the boat that they are never to speak again, it is also a close-up, the close-ups indicates that there is a lot of emotions going on, and clearly the father is mad. Sam and Suzy also illustrates the naive part of love.

You can also say that the mise-en-scéne is the fact that they are on an island, and how her father is taking her away on a boat.

The colors in the film is chosen carefully, it has been chosen because of the mood it gives the audience. The colors are all yellows, browns and reds usually. The colors are typically there because there is a certain way the character’s act and feel, when its brown it means something sad is happening, and when it’s yellow it means that something good is happening. The lighting in the clip is mostly natural, and therefore it seems that they are in a natural surroundings and they are happy with that.

A good example of the lightning and surroundings could be when the couple are laying in the tent with the orange tent, where the lightning is kind of yellow, when her father is taking the tent of them and they are being exposed to everybody they know, there is this bright natural light, but it is kind of goes directly into the eyes. But even though, the lightning creates a very fairy-tale kind of look. But when they come out of the tent, the sun/sky is very gray, the darkness that the background creates, makes this scene very important because it differs very much from traditional romantic comedies like ‘’The Notebook’’, ‘’How To Loose A Guy In 10 Days’’ etc.
