I want you to listen attentively and ponder the lyrics with your heart. (The teacher projects the lyric video of “I Can” from https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=66ftvQR5f8Y) What did you feel after you listened to the song?

The song is about realizing that we have a lot of gifts from above. There’s so much to be thankful for. Life is beautiful. “I Can” expresses our will power to create a dream and to share happiness to each and everyone.

The words ‘I can’. It denotes ability. The word ‘can’

What did you realize? It is a verb. Nice realization. What is the message of the song?

It is a helping verb, specifically a modal verb. Modal verbs are helping verbs which are used with other verbs to express ability, obligation, possibility, etc.

Very well said! You really understand the song. What word is dominant in this song? What does it denote? You are right! Which word between ‘I’ and ‘can’ actually denotes ability?

It denotes ability.

Correct! What part of speech is it?

It denotes permission. It denotes obligation. It shows recommendation.

What type of verb?

It denotes possibility.

What do you know about modal verbs?

Nice! We have six kinds of modal verbs. Look and analyze these sentences: 1. 2. 3. 4.

I can dance You may go. I must follow the rules. You should drink water instead of soft drinks. 5. He may be at the office. What does the modal in statement no. 1 denote? How about in statement no. 2? How about in statement no. 3? The modal ‘should’ in statement no. 4 shows what? What does the modal in statement no. 5 denote? Amazing! These are the kinds of modals: Modals expressing ability Modals expressing permission Modals expressing obligation Modals expressing recommendation Modals expressing possibility

The modal verb ‘could’ We use ‘can’ to denote present ability. For example: I can run fast in the oval. We use could to denote past ability. For example: I could run fast in the oval when I was younger. I can reach high notes when I sing. Back then, I could reach high notes when I sing.

None, Ma’am.

But today, we will first discuss about modals expressing ability. Aside from ‘can’ what other modal shows ability? When do we use each?

Great! Who else can give examples?
