MLA: Case 2.3 Jamie Mason

What impact would you imagine that these behaviors are having on Jamie’s social development? There are a few impacts that Jamie’s behaviors may have on his social development. Depending on the severity of one’s tics, the DSM-5 states, “ tics may disrupt functioning in daily

activities and can result in social isolation, interpersonal conflict, peer victimization, inability to work or to go to school, lower quality of life. The individual also may experience substantial psychological distress” (American Psychiatric Association, 2013, p. 84). These are some possibilities of things that could be declining Jamie’s social development, as a lot of his “compulsions” are happening in social settings like in the classroom/at school.

What resources would you recommend for Joan to access? Some resources I would recommend for Joan to access would be the Center for Disease Control’s webpage over Tourette’s Syndrome. On this webpage it gives these tips for parents with newly diagnosed children, “ Be an advocate for yourself and your child, find support, educate others, use school resources, and prevent bullying” (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2020). Going through these individual tips with Joan and connecting her with resources within the community she and Jamie can be involved with would be good. Examples such as: a TS support group and working with Jamie’s school counselor. What other professionals would you plan to involve in the case? Another professional I would involve with this case would be a speech pathologist, a neurologist, a school counselor, and a primary care doctor.

What is your initial diagnoses for Jamie? Include V-Codes In the case study, Joan explains that Jamie experiences both vocal and motor tics. His vocal tics are use of vulgar language and nonverbal signs, and his motor tics include: guttural noises in his threat, odd gestures with his head, rapidly eye blinking, and sudden flexing of the

entire body (Pomeroy, 2015, p. 33). My initial diagnosis for Jamie would be Tourette’s. According to the DSM-5, the V-Code for Tourette’s is F95.2 (American Psychiatric Association, 2013, p. 81). I believe that due to this possible diagnosis, Z60. 4: Social exclusion and rejection should be considered due to when the tics are happening, which is in school/social settings. List one possible medication that might be prescribed to Jamie by a medical provider, based on the diagnoses you give. If you think no medication would be give, explain why? I would not recommend prescribing a medication to Jamie right away before meeting with a neurologist. On the CDC’s website about Tourette Syndrome it says, “Medications do not eliminate tics completely. However, they can help some people with TS in their everyday life. There is no one medication that is best for all people. Most medications prescribed for TS have not been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treating tics” (CDC, 2020). Without a more thorough investigation into Jamie’s symptoms, triggers and overall diagnoses, I would not recommend a prescription.
