Status 3

1. Describe three statuses that you occupy in society.

I am a mother for life.

I am a black woman and a wife.

I am currently an online student at SNHU.

2. Identify whether each status is ascribed or achieved.

This is an ascribed status.

This is an ascribed status.

This is an achieved status.

3. Explain what the role expectations are for each status.

The role of a mother is to nurture, care for, cook, clean, be a teacher, doctor, the financial controller and to make sure that the child is clothed, healthy and taken care of 100% (Tempo Co, 2019).

The role of a wife is to be honest, faithful, being supportive, respectful, and being able to handle whatever obstacles you may face together. The role of a black woman is to be strong and to be respectful of the things that you will face on the daily (Ali, Magsood, Oct 2020).

The expectation of a student is to attend classes and participate by reading all assignments and turning them in on time.

4. Provide one example of role conflict.

Being one of the sole providers and having to be the caregiver and provider no matter what.

Not being seen as good enough or not fulfilling your wifely duties and being discriminated against as a black woman.

Facing challenges by not being able to keep up with your assignments due to other conflicts/obligations in your life. Possibly having to drop out due to these issues.

5. Provide one example of role strain.

Not being able to be there for your children as much as they need you or not being there as much as you’d like due to having to work a fulltime job to provide for your children and household.

The role strain is possibly being on your own after being married for years and not knowing how to pick up the pieces of your new reality.

Going to school and trying to balance work and home life too. Another role strain is also being in school while being a wife and a mother.

6. Provide one example of a status that might be subject to social inequalities. For example, mothers tend to make less money in the workplace, an experience known as the motherhood penalty.

The father is seen as the breadwinner and man of the housed while the mother is expected to be barefoot and pregnant while taking care of the house (cook, clean and take care of children).

Wives are expected to be on-call for your husband, children, household and whatever else that may come up (obstacles or setbacks).

One social inequality is when you’re older and going to school with children and not fully knowing what you want to major in at school.
