Ali Price Billy Elliot Movie 1) (a) Identify one concept about individual development (any concept, theory, or model we have discussed in this course) that is presented accurately in the movie? a) Bronfenbrenner's ecological theory is accurately presented in the movie Billy Elliot. One of the five levels that is specifically demonstrated is the chronosystem level. This level is related to the time period in which an individual develops in. (b) Use a specific example taken from the movie to explain the concept. b) A specific example taken from the movie to explain this concept is the violent strike against British coal miners. 11 year old, Billy Elliot, grew up in a time period that was on strike. He lived in a life of cruelty and poverty, especially around his brother and father who were miners that were apart of this strike. This violent strike affected his individual development, and it was shown throughout the movie in his language and behavior. 2) (a) Describe the role of Billy’s father on Billy development. a) Billy's father was an authoritarian parent. This means that he was demanding and controlling yet rejecting and unresponsive. He placed firm limits on Billy’s life, with very little verbal exchange. He enforced very rigid rules, and he only wanted Billy to be a boxer, not a dancer. (b) Explain your answer using a specific example taken from the movie. b) An example from the movie was when Billy was at the kitchen table talking to his father. His father was not happy that Billy said that he liked to dance. Specifically

the father stated to Billy, “ballet is okay for girls not lads.” When Billy spoke back to his father that he only wanted to become a professional dancer, he threw him against a wall and started to beat him. This shows that there was no verbal exchange allowed between the two and that there were very rigid rules in the house. 3) (a) Describe the role of Mrs. Wilkinson (the teacher of local dance school) on Billy Development. a) Mrs. Wilkinson was the teacher of the local dance school that Billy went too. Mrs. Wilkinson was a positive role model to Billy and not only acted as a teacher, but as a friend to him. She knew Billy was gifted and wanted him to use his talent of Ballet to his full potential. Although at first Billy’s father did not approve of him participating in Ballet, Mrs. Wilkinson still trained Billy each week. While she trained Billy she used teaching approaches, such as the behaviorist approach. (b) Explain your answer using a specific example taken from the movie. b) A specific example taken from the movie is during Billy’s private sessions with Mrs. Wilkinson. During their sessions, she would used many “drill and practice” tasks to teach Billy ballet. She was very hard on him and did not treat him differently than the other girls. Also, Mrs. Wilkinson focused more on mechanical responses and would tell him to do this and that, without giving him the understanding of what he was learning. This approach gave Billy the ability to express himself through ballet....
