Chapter 6: Greening the Value Chain Companies have integrated the idea of greening the value chain where green purchasing and total quality management; in terms of empowerment of employees, customer-focused, continuous improvement and zero waste, life cycle analysis and environmental marketing. What is the relationship between sustainability and greening the value chain? Green product is defined as products and services that reduce health and environmental impacts compared to similar products and services used for the same purpose. Sustainability, on the other hand, can be represented by a three-legged stool having a leg for environmental, social and financial responsibility

On one hand, stakeholders are becoming more demanding and concerned about the environmental performance of their products and processes. On the other hand, public authorities are placing demand on companies to comply with legal and other requirements to be: a. Environmental friendly; b. Non-life threatening; c. Non-health hazardous. This means that company also has to produce products that take into consideration of the triple bottom line to ensure Sustainability.

The aims of a green approach to Value Chains is: i.) to ensure the sustainable use of natural resources and to increase the share of renewable and received resources at the input side of the value chain. ii.) to maximize material and energy efficiency at each stage of the process, and iii.) to reduce negative environmental impacts as outputs at all points of the chain....
