PROFESSIONAL ROLES AND VALUES

2

Professional Role and Values Response to Scenario Mr. Newcomb has requested to see his mistress. He has never asked of anything from me as his nurse. I understand that time is short for him since he has decided to stop treatment for his cancer. He wants me as his nurse to lie or be dishonest to Mrs. Newcomb about visiting him tomorrow. I explained to Mr. Newcomb I would not be able to lie to his wife. I would suggest that Mr. Newcomb set up Mrs. Newcomb a spa day for tomorrow; during that time, Mr. Newcomb could have whomever he would like to visit him. Application of Patient Principles Ethic principle justice is equal and fair treatment regardless of other factors like race, sex, etc (Cherry and Jacob, 2019). Mr. Newcomb realized that he would receive the same respect and care even after I refused to lie to Mrs. Newcomb for him to see his mistress, this is how I showed the ethical principle justice. Non-maleficence is the duty not to inflict harm abstaining from injuring others and helping further their well-being (Cherry and Jacob, 2019). I showed nonmaleficence because I did not tell Mrs. Newcomb about the affair that Mr. Newcomb had. Beneficence promotes goodness, kindness and charity (Cherry and Jacob, 2019). I fulfilled beneficence by demonstrating kindness and empathy towards the patient by disclosing that he could make his request happen. Autonomy respect for a person, personal freedom right of competent people to make choices (Cherry and Jacob, 2019). Mr. Newcomb acted on his right and managed the predicament with my help; this shows autonomy.

PROFESSIONAL ROLES AND VALUES

Personal Beliefs and Values As a nurse, I am very caring and passionate about what I do and caring for my patients. I am not here to judge their lifestyles or their decisions. My job is to provide them a comfortable environment and take care of them. My concession would not let me lie to Mrs. Newcomb if something happened while the mistress was there.

Promoting Self-Care Strategies I must take care of myself to provide outstanding care to my patients to the best of my ability. After work, I like to take a walk around my neighborhood, which helps me release my stress from work or life. Another self-care promoting, I do is taking a long hot bubble bath with dimmed lights and soft music playing. Relaxes muscles and just put my mind at ease from the stress of my day. Lastly, just being able to come home and spend time with my family make me relaxed when I had a stressful day because not everyone can enjoy their family.
