Description

Muscle diagrams Use the diagrams on the following pages to help you study Learning Objective 15 from the Muscles and Movements block. 15. For each of the major muscles and muscle groups below, you should be able to state their actions at each joint they cross and have a general idea of where they attach (origin and insertion). Muscles: biceps brachii gluteus maximus pectoralis major sternocleidomastoid triceps brachii masseter

deltoid latissimus dorsi rectus abdominis trapezius temporalis orbicularis oris

Muscle groups: (consider only common attachments and actions for the group rather than individual components of the group)  quadriceps femoris (= vastus medialis, vastus intermedius, vastus lateralis & rectus femoris)  the "hamstrings" (= semimembranosus, semitendinosus & biceps femoris)  triceps surae (= medial and lateral heads of gastrocnemius & soleus)  erector spinae (= iliocostalis, longissiumus & spinalis) The following tips may help you to achieve this:  Use the diagrams on the following pages to help – name the muscles numbered 1-15 and colour in each muscle to demonstrate the whole muscle (a number of muscles are showing their component parts). Which of these muscles/muscle groups is not shown on the diagrams? Why?  Use principle M4 to determine the structure and function of the muscles.  Consider principle M5 when looking at the attachments of each of the muscles.  Determine their actions by using principles M6 and M7.  The muscles can all be found on the diagrams in relevant textbooks.
