Week one: In your own words define these terms. Use words your patients would understand. Asepsis and infection control Pathogen – a microorganism that can cause a disease Bacteria – a microorganism that can take many different shapes and cause many different diseases and must be treated depending on its shape and characteristics Aerobic bacteria – a type of bacteria that can only survive with air Anaerobic bacteria – a type of bacteria that can thrive without air Normal flora – a type of microorganism that lives in or on your body, naturally defending it Opportunistic – a type of microorganism that is usually harmless, but with certain circumstances can be dangerous to the body it inhabits Antigen – any foreign material that enters the body that causes a response from your immune system Antibody – a type of cell created by your immune system to fight against an antigen Bacteremia – when bacteria enters the blood Colonization – when a microorganism lives inside a person’s body without showing any signs or symptoms of there being an infection Vital signs Tachy – a fast heart rate ranging from 100-180 beats per minute Brady – a slow heart rate bellow 60 beats per minute Arrhythmia – an irregular heart rhythm Apnea – periods of time where there is no breathing Eupnea – normal and unlabored breathing Pyrexia – another word for a fever or a person with a body temperature above 100 degrees Fahrenheit febrile – a person with a fever afebrile – a person with a normal body temperature Pain and comfort management Nociceptive pain – the common pain felt from a painful stimulus Cutaneous pain – pain that is closer to the skin Somatic pain – a deeper pain that originates in the bones, tendons, and ligaments Visceral pain – this pain is a type that originates from within the bodies organs in the chest, abdomen, or head Neuropathic pain – an injury or disease that can bring pain to the central nervous system or the peripheral nervous system Psychogenic pain – pain that originates from a psychological point instead of a physical point Referred pain – this occurs when pain originates from one point in your body but is felt in a different location of the body Acute pain – pain that comes quickly and usually lasts short periods of time (hours-days) Chronic pain – pain is persistent and lasts a long time (more than 3 months) Intractable pain – pain that is resistant to therapy and a variety of interventions such as medicine or heat
Communication Helping relationship – a relationship in which two people are both giving and receiving helping with each other Rapport – this is a feeling of trust among two people SBAR – This acronym stands for Situation, Background, Assessment, and Recommendations. This is commonly used to give thorough and accurate information about a patient Nursing process – this is a process used by the nurse along with the patient to assess the patient, come up with a diagnosis, form a plan to heal the patient, implement the plan, and see if the plan is working Nursing diagnosis – this is a judgment performed by the nurse based on knowledge and experience in the nursing field...
