1. PRACTICES PRACTICE BREAKING THE ICE AND BLEACH DRAWING

DESCRIPTION OF THE PRACTICE: This practice was the first one of the course and we weren’t familiarized with the techniques and procedures of the subject. We were in charge of observing our classmates and drawing them following a 4-steps-procedure: first, drawing with points, second, unite these points, third, draw squares and circles creating the legs and arms and last, complete the draw by including clothes, facial gestures and details. It was very interesting to create a portrait for ourselves, how form lines and points a whole drawing of a person was created. Also, we were in charge of painting these drawings by using bleach. The result of this was shocking for me as I didn’t expect that the bleach would create a white picture. But I have to admit, that the realization of the picture with the bleach has some difficulties as the bleach extends itself fastly in the paper, so details or straight segments were difficult to draw.

PRACTICE PAINT WITH EGG

DESCRIPTION OF THE PRACTICE: When we were first told that we must paint using egg, I was surprised because I couldn't conceive how this material could be useful for it. We had to separate the yolk and the egg white and one was dedicated to making darker colors and the other one was for lighter colors. Together with the egg parts, we had some pigments with different primary colours that helped us to create the colours for our drawing. I decided to paint a still life as it seems easy to represent for me, as I had some difficulties with the mixing of the pigments and the eggs. The making of this practice was fun to do, as I haven't ever worked with these kinds of materials, so it was fascinating to discover how colours were created.

PRACTICE MODELLING WITH PAPER AND BREAD

↑ DESCRIPTION OF THE PRACTICE: This practice was one of the most difficult we were in charge of doing. The materials were plenty: some newspaper, bread, some recipients, lemons and latex. The process was different for both sculptures, for the bread one we mixed the bread in tiny pieces with latex creating a viscous dough that should be very well mixed so the paper infiltrated in the bread creating a more compact and malleable dough. With the newspaper, the process was a little bit longer. Firstly, we broke the paper into many pieces and put it in a recipient with water for over a week. When the newspaper was wet enough and filled with water, we removed the water by using a sock and we grinded the resulting dough. Posteriorly, we used the latex to mix with the dough, as we did with the bread case and once our doughs were available, I created the sculptures. For the bread case, I made an anchor. This is a very important symbol in my life; I even have a tattoo of it. For me it represents the stability I want in my life, being my lighthouse that would help me to be positive. For the newspaper case, I wanted to make whoever sees it a reflection. If you first observe it, what you will see is a penis but if you vary your perspective you can also see some eyes and a nose. This represents how sexualized our society is and how we tend to think tricky every time we see something ‘suspicious’.

↑ PRACTICE SENSORY CLASS DESCRIPTION OF THE PRACTICE: This class was based on expressing our feelings graphically. Firstly, we listened to a song by Sigur Ros with our eyes closed, trying to concentrate on the music and the sensations it gave us. This song had minimalist sounds that had the ability to evoke feelings and sensations that we can translate into pictorial images. The language that Sigur Ros use is a mixture between Icelandic and a jargon that introduces letters between the words creating a coded message. Posteriorly, we opened our eyes and we must represent the feeling and sensations we had experienced in a piece of paper. We had multiple materials to choose, paints, waxes or pigments. I decided to use paint and what I drew is what I’m explaining now. As the music was very relaxing and pure, celestial images came to my mind, so a religious figure was needed and I drew an angel with a halo and some sparks around him. Also, the vibes of the song evoke nature and the sea, so I drew some flowers coming from the waves of a blue sea.

PRACTICE MEMORIES INSIDE PUNCHED POCKETS

DESCRIPTION OF THE PRACTICE: This practice was one of the ones I had enjoyed the most. We had to work with plastic holders and paints. With some primary colours and other one we could create by mixing these primary colors, we had to paint the inside of these holders in order to create a drawing that brings us memories about our childhood. As it was very difficult to represent it only with a holder, we had some extra plastic pieces that could be painted to complete the drawing. In my first drawing, I represent one of my favourite hobbies during my childhood, which was football. I lived playing this game, so I loved to play with my parents in the grass field I have in my backyard. Also, I did many trips and excursions with my parents, cousins, uncles… so we always brought with us a football ball to play wherever the space let us. The second drawing represents a very special place from my childhood. I live in a valley, so I am surrounded by mountains, grass, campsites and forest and one day, I went with my family to a beautiful meadow, where there were colorful and pretty flowers and it was plain and perfect to run around, it was very similar to the meadow represented in the Window’s background, so I was very surprised and satisfied by this place.

PRACTICE DRAWING WITH THE RIGHT SIDE OF OUR BRAIN

DESCRIPTION OF THE PRACTICE: This practice was one of the most complex to complete. We were in charge of recreating a famous drawing (‘Las meninas’ de Velázquez) by hand, which means by observing it and copying it in a new paper. For this, we must be very careful about where the lines are placed, the angles and the figures because the space is limited and there are many elements to represent. With this activity, we used the right side of our brain. The right part of the brain is more visual and intuitive. It’s sometimes referred to as the analog brain. It has a more creative and less organized way of thinking. It is connected with elements such as intuition, imagination, arts, holistic thinking or feeling visualization.
