Developing navigation...

Description

Navigation Schema Horizontal Navigation: www.bestbuy.com 

Are the website categories clearly defined in the navigation bar? o Personally, I found the white or at times yellow text color against the bright blue to be too bright and it hurt my eyes a little to try and read it. I also personally found the font size to be too small, but my children said it was fine for them to read. o I did appreciate the images being included with the links in the categories, but I also noticed that when I clicked on the Menu option beside the Search bar it was a vertical list (I would consider BestBuy being a mixed navigation) that was long, but I also appreciated how detailed the lists were, so I didn’t have to search so much for one specific thing. I could understand how some people wouldn’t like the list being that detailed but I appreciated it.

Is the navigation bar easy to use? Is the navigation bar consistent with the overall layout and look and feel of the website design? o I did find the navigation with the images being easier to use against the bright blue background since the font was kind of hard to read, but when I click on the Menu beside the search bar I found the vertical list being a little more detailed so I think it would just depend really on if I just want to browse or if I was looking for a specific thing which navigation I would gear towards. I think if the font was easier to read, I may go towards the images navigation just because I am more a visual person but with it being hard to read, I found the vertical more detailed list

easier at this time. But I do like how it has both options for navigating so it crosses all types of customers to be user friendly. 

Are the category titles aligned with the content when you click through the navigation bar? o Yes, while it did take a little bit for the pages to load, I did find all the pages had the right content when I clicked on different tabs.

Is the navigation consistent throughout the site as you click through various pages? o Yes, I also realized that the bright blue background was just for the homepage, and it became easier to read against the white background on the rest of the pages. It did take a little bit for the pages to load but the navigation seemed to be the same on all the different pages that I visited.

Vertical Navigation: www.homedepot.com 

Are the website categories clearly defined in the navigation bar? o I found the drop down menu to be very helpful and I really like how they even have a projects calculator to help users figure out things for their needs.

Is the navigation bar easy to use? Is the navigation bar consistent with the overall layout and look and feel of the website design? o I found the navigation bar to be very easy to use. I did think the “shop by category” in the middle of the page to be a little off. I would have put it under the navigation bar at the top instead of having to scroll down and see it but I also understand that they wanted to put the deals and savings as one of the first things users see when they come onto the site.

Are the category titles aligned with the content when you click through the navigation bar? o The content on each page perfectly matches up with the titles on the pages. The pages did take a little bit longer than I would have liked to load but there is so much content on all the different pages that I understand it would take a bit to load all the pictures. I really like how detailed the navigation bar is and how there are different options to help the user with their wants.

Is the navigation consistent throughout the site as you click through various pages? o The navigation remains the same throughout the various pages and it is very user friendly. While it may seem a little busy it is not overwhelming to me.

Mixed Navigation: www.Ebay.com 

Are the website categories clearly defined in the navigation bar? o The categories were clearly defined in the navigation bar and I like how it gives more options when you click on the “Shop by Category” beside the search bar and drop down menu when you move the mouse over the tabs in the navigation bar.

Is the navigation bar easy to use? Is the navigation bar consistent with the overall layout and look and feel of the website design? o I think the navigation bar was very user friendly and remained consistent when I clicked on different pages. At first, I thought it would be busy, cluttered, and overwhelming since it had been years since I visited Ebay (thanks to Amazon) but it really wasn’t. It was simple and having four items on each row kept it from being too cluttered. The black text against the white background made it easy on

the eyes and I liked how it has a heart the user can click to put in a Saved tab that is on the navigation bar. 

Are the category titles aligned with the content when you click through the navigation bar? o The content matches the titles and remains consistent throughout the pages. I really like how at the bottom of each page it gives information about what that page consists of, for example the Music page has things like, suggestions for being able to buy concert tickets or equipment. The Candles page has suggestion for presents or scented candles and so on.

Is the navigation consistent throughout the site as you click through various pages? o The information did remain consistent while I clicked on different pages. It was simple to use and not cluttered. It remained easy to use and had me wondering why I quit using the site years ago honestly. Assume you were to build navigation of your website from scratch. What navigation elements would you need? Provide a list of your basic navigation elements. o User friendly o Mixed navigation o Tabs being clearly labeled o Mega menus and links o Basic tabs such as home, contact, about, etc. o Making sure it will work across all sorts of devices o Making sure it has a warm feel, not busy, overwhelming, easy on the eyes...
