Needs Assessment - April Apply a Strengths based approach To advance towards a strengths-based approach, I would identify Aprils Difficulties & Needs to build a foundation for her strengths and relate them appropriately for the desired results. A contributing cause of April’s current Difficulties & Needs is that she was recently in a past, abusive relationship that affected her difficulties in work: financial difficulties, giving up her flat (that is now her biggest concern) and engaging with other attendees at the service (a lack of confidence is apparent with also being described as ‘confusing’ from others). 

Individual Strengths – April has unique and motivating personal qualities and skills such as being optimistic, creative, self-reliant and resilient. She is also very determined when focusing on her future, goals, dreams and plans. In the past (before her abusive relationship and giving up her flat) she has described herself as organised, enthusiastic and very independent - qualities that have decreased in the recent months and that she would like to gain back. April is quiet, observant and humble. We can use these skills and qualities as motivation for getting back on track and her independency, hard work, respect and commitment will strengthen her ability to apply for new tenancy applications as well.

Environmental Strengths – April has interests and hobbies in crafts and the visual arts (main programs within the service she has excelled at and committed to for the past few years). We can utilise these artistic strengths as techniques for exploring new recreational programs she can get involved with at the service (new classes with new people) and possibly use her passion and background in art to act as a possible volunteer teacher for the class: boosting her confidence and socializing with other attendees – a good stepping stone towards engaging with others. April has mentioned a job opportunity that she saw recently that matches her desired skills and experience and she would like to give it a go. Even mentioning that she has been looking online at job advertisements shows a great amount of initiative and positivity – a strength that we can support and use to implement April taking control and action.

Analyse information about any co-existing issues April has co-existing issues that all intertwine and affect each other. As mentioned, April has recently been involved in an abusive relationship that damaged multiple areas in her life: from losing confidence to unexpectedly living with her sister. The abusive relationship ended 4 months ago but still affects April emotionally and has caused her to

#37620 5428 disengage with people (particularly men) both in and out of the service. While she was in this relationship, April did not show up for her shifts, her work performance decreased and eventually she was dismissed (she was in this role for 3 years and built herself up from the ground). This caused incredible pain in her self-esteem, confidence and her finances so she was forced to give up her flat – hence moving in with her sister, Lyn. Since April is currently unemployed, she feels as if she is a burden that doesn’t contribute much to the household. Lyn on the other hand disagrees and in a separate discussion supports April and is happy for her to stay as long as she needs. Lyn is unaware of April starting to lead to a depressive phase by having suicidal and miserable thoughts and feelings – but April has stated that she doesn’t want to add more trouble to Lyn’s plate. April is bored most of the time and misses working and feeling like she ‘has a purpose’. Evidence based judgements
