Netball Attacking...

Description

Name: Rachel Allan Sport: Netball Date:

Duration of session: 04/03/19 45 minutes

Time

Content of practices

Session aim:  To allow all the intermediate level players to know why, how and when to use movement and positioning when attacking during a game of netball. Session objective:  Use technical practices that involve the whole technical skill of attacking and driving up the court.  Use tactical drills to get the participants to make decisions for themselves.  To increase the accuracy and consistency of the players attacking and decrease the delay they may have under pressure in a game situation through a conditioned game.

Aim/objective of practice/equipment required

Coaching points

Introduction/Presentation: 2 minutes

10 minutes

I will introduce the group by saying my name and telling them the points we are going to cover and make sure they have a rough understanding of the session. Also, to highlight any dangers in the area I will be coaching in.  The presentation will summarise the whole of the basics of attacking in Netball.  Give bibs now to avoid confusion. Warm-up:

Different safety procedures I will be going over include, removal of any jewellery, hair tied back, any objects in the way that may cause harm, any illnesses or injuries, etc.

Equipment – None needed

1st Pulse Raiser – “Running Pass”

Aim – 

Each Player will be running around the space individually. Each person should have a ball

Equipment –

To gradually get heart beat raised and get the body ready for physical activity. This also heats up the muscles and stretches to prevent injury happening.

Everyone should be moving always. 

Netball per person

1st Pulse raiser –  Players can run in any direction to use up the space.  No one should be running in a circle.  Whistle should be blown when the ball is passed. Dynamic Stretches –  High knees (Hamstrings, quadriceps) – Bring knees up to chest, horizontal to the ground. 

Opening/Closing Gates (Adductors/Abductors) – Raise one knee up to a 90-degree angle. Turn it out from the body and lower to the ground. Opposite direction for closing the gate.

Walking Lunges – Standing tall both feet together. Keeping the back straight lunge forward with the right leg. The right thigh should be parallel with the ground and the right lower leg vertical. Spring back to the starting position. Repeat with the left leg Circling arms (shoulders, triceps, biceps) – clockwise + anti clockwise, brushing past the ears. More sport specific skills will be demonstrated.

On my command everyone should pass to a new player and then continue running. Dynamic Stretching – Circuit Use different apparatus in a circle in order to make a circuit of different netball skills. This will prepare the athletes for the game and sport as a whole by using all techniques. Also, incorporate dynamic stretching in between so the stretching doesn’t become tedious. Use skills such as, squat, jump, lunge, sprint, fast feet, hit ball off of the wall, side steps and pivot. nd

2 Pulse Raiser More Sport Specific Have a circle with 2 players in the centre, balls start at opposite ends of the circle, ball is thrown in, and

 

2nd Pulse raiser –  Be alert  Communicate  Change type of pass once balls reach back to the same person

player follows the pass. Ball is thrown out and the player follows again. If at any point a ball is dropped, players must reset. Add competition if needed. Technical Practice’s: 6 minutes

2 nd Practice – Technical Only (Positioning) Drill 2 is purely technical. Cones are positioned diagonally across the court. Feeder stands in the centre circle. Player 1 stands a bit behind them to the left. Player 1 runs onto the ball who then passes onto player 2 and then to player 3, and so on, to then take a shot.

Aim – 

To practice explosive skills and get free from defenders and drive up the court. Also work on speed and positioning.

Run onto the pass. Be alert and ready to run. Have hand out ready to receive the pass.

Equipment –  2 Netballs, cones

Communicate. Remember footwork, jump stop or one two.

Play teams against each other for pressure if drill is too easy. 1 st Practice – Technical and Tactical (Movement) 6 minutes

Feeder in the middle and line in front. Feeder has a ball and so does player 3. Player 1 makes a run diagonally to the right and receives the pass and then passes it back to the next player in line. Player 2 then feeds the ball to the feeder and makes a run left to the receive the ball and play it back into the line. Change feeder after a while. Add the pivot or change of direction after a bit. Minimum of 5 players either side.

Aim –

Hands up to receive the pass.

Let’s players learn to fake run, i.e. change direction, lets them get an idea of pace and how to utilise movement on the court as well as space.

Speed is key as well as agility. Move onto the ball.

Equipment – Watch footwork.  

2/4 Netballs 2/4 Cones

Communicate.

3 rd Practice – Tactical Only (Decision Making)

6 minutes

Centre plays will be given hand gestures in order to know which player is receiving the pass. From this centre play, drill 1 will begin used and the attack will be on. Fake runs from drill 2 can be made to throw players off.

Aim 

Gestures: This allows a connection from the beginning to the attack. Gives teams an idea of decision making while keeping the 1 and 2 drill prominent.

Equipment –  

1 Netball Bibs

Right hand up: going to wing attack Left hand up: going to goal attack Slap right leg: going to goal defence Slap left leg: going to wing defence Communicate Think what player is best to pass to.

Conditioned Game 12

Aim – 

The aim of this conditioned game is to develop

minutes

Leave up to the players about positioning and movement, explain I will be correcting positioning during play.

Cool down: 2 minutes

Quad Stretch - Quadriceps

Across Body Delt Stretch - Deltoids

Standing Upper Back Stretch - Deltoid and Trapezius Stretch

Conclusion:    

Equipment –  Netballs  Bibs  Stands

Aim – 

Gentle jog around the area to cool down and for heart rates to return to normal.

Gather all players close enough to hear. Direct Static Stretches by showing how to do the stretch, what muscle is being stretched and how long to hold before changing to opposite limb. Stretches to include:  Hamstring Stretch - Hamstring

1 minute

players attacking in a game situation where quick decisions and accuracy is at its highest necessity.

Standard Rules apply - Explain rules. However, centre passes must be called by hand gesture.

Gather all players close enough that they can hear my voice. Ask if everyone enjoyed the session and if they have any questions or queries for me. Ask 3 open questions about the session including the coaching points that I have tried to learn them. Ask the players if they think they improved their ability for the skill in the sport Netball and why do they think they improved.

The aim of the cool down is to gradually lower each player’s heart rate and reduce the risk of blood pooling by maintaining muscle action and heart rate to pump blood back to the heart. Remove waste products such as lactic acid which will help calm down the sore ‘day after’ feeling. Brings down the heart rate, body temperature and breathing down to near normal position slowly and get the blood circulating freely to the heart. Stretches are performed to help to reduce muscle fatigue. This helps increase blood flow and allow everyone to not feel as sore and immobile the next day.

    

No travelling with the ball is aloud Calling held ball Replayed ball Not being set Obstruction

Make sure no one over extends their stretching.

Keep stretches to a comfortable distance but still allowing feeling the stretch.

Make sure there is plenty space between everyone.

Say what is being stretched and when to switch arm etc.

   

Hamstring Stretch targets the Hamstring Muscle Quad Stretch Targets the Quadriceps Muscle Across Body Deltoid Stretch targets the deltoid muscle. Mainly Posterior. Standing upper back stretch targets’ the Deltoid and Trapezius Muscles.

Equipment – N/A

Aim – 

The aim of my conclusion is to have a group talk to all the players on a more relaxed, personal level and to allow me to see their opinions on my delivery and the session in general.

Equipment – 

Whiteboard and pen to go over the main points of the session. (Diagram sheets If required)

Open Q 1) How do we receive the ball? a.) Run onto it. Open Q 2) when in netball are the three opportunities to attack? a.) Turn-over, rebound or centre play. Open Q 3) what can we use to distract defensive and attacking players? a.) Misdirection i.e. fake runs and pivots.

3 players work with 1 ball between them, one player is the feeder, one is the attacker and one is the other defender. It is the defenders job to stick with the attacker to try and intercept as many of the passes as possible, one repeated 5 times each player will rotate. 2 nd Drill- Interception readiness; Groups of 6, two feeders pass the ball between them, while the two attackers are trying to get free in front of the defenders. No contact between players. attackers should make small movements towards the ball, the defenders must be ready and be able to try read the attackers movements to intercept the ball Drill 3- point of interception; Lader system Players work in groups of 3, Two attackers passing the ball back and forth about 5m apart. 5 cones set up in a semi circle behind them, about 2m away from them. The cones will indicate the starting position of the defender. Defender stands by the first cone, before running in to intercept a pass from the attacker next to them. They then pass the ball back to the opposite player and run to the next cone. Where they will start agin trying to intercept the next pass Conditioned Game (Full court 7v7 Game) If the team can perform 4 successful interceptions they will receive a extra point.

If you do not intercept the ball successful you must start back at the previous cone. Equipent4 netballs 20 white cones

-Make sure that the defender is looking over their shoulder watching which way the defender is going. -stay on toes at all times -Knees bent, weight forward -Feet shoulder width apart, ready -power through the knees to generate power into burst forward to intercept -Fast small steps -Head up back straight - Full range of movement, extending arms out fully and use feet movement as vision of play -When receiving the ball, snatch in as quickly as possible to avoid loss of possession Drill 2 – interception readiness; -(Reiterate previous coaching points) progress on from them. -Defender must intercept the ball by snatching the ball and pulling it close stopping the attack from receiving the ball -Defenders must be side on to the attackers to apply pressure -Although one defender is marking 1 attacker, they must use their peripheral vision too also keep an eye on other attacker. -Power Through the knees to generate power to push off and intercept -Interception must be timed as the ball leaves the feeders hands, defenders strive in towards ball intercepting the attack. Drill 3 – Point of interception; lader system-Quick feet running onto the ball and recovering it -Head up, weight forward, on toes, Knees bent ready to push of when the time is ready -Stand side on to the attacker to apply pressure -Defender should time the intercepton when the attacker releases the ball -Players should not take big strides, keep them short and sharp - Pass behind the player will be the most difficult as they need to strive out and infront - Make sure players are using 2 hands to catch the ball and not slapping it away. -Snatch the ball in close th chest to avoid loosing the ball

Conclusion/debrief: Recap Aim & Objectives Thank participants for taking part

Aim ; Stretch all musclses off properly Objectives; Ensure all musclses that were used during the session are thoroughly stretched off to avoid future injury or tightness.

Conditioned Game Ensure the condition is applied Focus on players making a successful interception and gaining possession. Signal up if the ball is intercepted by returned to the same team it is not correct. -Reiterate the condition throughout the game -Defenders standing side on to their opponents, following them -On their toes ready, small movements Hamstrings- sit on the ground, both legs together , toes in the air, deep breath in stretch and touch toes Groins- sit on the ground, bring feet together, use hands to push down on knees until you can feet the stretch. Quadriceps; grabbing one leg, hold foot towards bum, keeping knees together, pulling foot towards bum till you can feet the stretch Open questions; Why is it important to make sure your passes are sharp and fast ? How can we make sure our interception is effective every time? Why is it important that you use man to man marking within a game?
