Description

Notes for presentation There are many benefits to athlete centered coaching. Empowers athletes -

Athlete-centered coaching empowers athletes as there is more focus on their personal achievements, and personal goals. As opposed to more traditional approaches to coaching where athletes have less control.

-

Athletes have increased independence and self-reliance. This can help with confidence in their ability.

Empowers coach -

Athlete centered coaching can reduce the stress put on the coach as they are no longer the sole source of direction and knowledge. Athlete centered coaching is a good tool to use to hold athletes accountable for their learning as it gives them the opportunity to change the direction of their training.

-

Athlete centered coaching transfers the responsibility to the athlete. This can reduce the Blame game as both parties are equally responsible for outcome. both the successes and failures.

Athlete preference -

Athlete centered coaching creates a positive learning environment and caters to the needs of all athletes. It prioritises the holistic development of the players and is necessary to further develop independent athletes.

By contrast, a coach centered approach does not always address the needs of the players and can often result in a negative environment. This can lead to player development taking a back seat to results preventing athletes from reaching their full potential. Over the years I have competed in both team sports and individual sports. Based on my experience, I believe that an athlete centered approach to coaching is more beneficial when competing or training in individual sports as opposed to team sports where traditional approaches may be more beneficial. I found that a more athlete centered coaching approach helped me to take control of my training and further develop my skills as an athlete. However, this is just my thoughts based on my experiences, every athlete will be different and what works for me may be different to what works for you....
