Presentation Notes: 4.8 Environmental Concerns: Operations affects the natural environment. Increasing regulation and consumer scrutiny, firms are continuously considering how to meet the demands of these stakeholders. Three areas of decision that affect the environmental impact: 1. There are technologies for pollution prevention. These investments reduce or eliminate pollutants from the production process. For instance, solar power vs coal based. ADD NEW SLIDE. 2. Pollution control technologies are also structural investments. They differ from pollution prevention tech in that they are used to treat or dispose of pollutants and harmful byproducts that are outputs from the process. This creates another process by adding another step to deal with the waste by-product from the process. ADD SLIDE AND EXAMPLES OF THIS BY-PRODUCTS. 3. Pollution practices retraining workers to use the existing process in a new manner and increasing cross-functional coordination to seek creative and innovation improvements in environmental impact. Companies are making the changes and contribution to the environmental impact: in 2015, the US environmental protection agency recognize 128 organizations with ENERGY STAR awards for their sustained progress in reducing energy consumption in their facilities. These company saved 2.5 billion tons of greenhouse gas emissions. To name a few of these companies: home depot, Panasonic, Philips, New York Presbyterian hospital. The point is to create innovative and creative ways to help the planet just a little bit more. 4.9 Cross- functional Decision Making There are many cross-functional interactions in process selection decisions. This means that many departments must get involved for the best decision as the other departments may contribute to the decisions or affected if they are not involved. 1. The marketing department estimates and manages future demand. They should be aware of the process choice implications by managing demand to support the process choices that are made. 2. Finance because of the capital investment required. 3. Human resources because they provide the human capital that is consistent with the process selection choices. 4. Information technology and accounting because IT knows the how they know techniques to measure performance and different data requirements and accounting because large investments are required in the purchase in hardware and software.

They are strategic decisions that determine the future capabilities of the firm and this involve all functional areas along with general management. With proper cross-functional coordination, the processes selected can offer competitive advantage to the firm and will be supported by all functions....
