MYTHS AND HEROES

A myth is a story that may or may not be true. They may not be records or other proof that they happened, but at least some parts of myths may be true. Some myths may have started as ‘true’ stories but as people re-told them some parts may have been changed by mistake, or to make them more interesting. All cultures have myths and this mythology has been developed over time. Mythology includes the legends of our history, our religions, stories of how the world was created, and our heroes. These stories have great symbolic power, and this may be a major reason why they survive as long as they do, sometimes for thousands of years. A hero is a person who is admired for their courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. It can be the main character in a book or a film or a person with superhuman qualities. It can also be a modern-day hero, a person who has performed a heroic act or simply our own personal hero, our role model, who we look up to. Why are myths and heroes so important to our society? First, in the video we saw in class 'What is a hero' produced by the youtuber Jim Combs, we learn that a hero is defined thanks to its super abilities and its achievements. As Jim Combs say in the video, superheroes are brave, smart and strong. They want to save lives. They are icons for kids and adults. They often have a costume and the kids can get dressed as them. They are important because they bring and spread a peaceful message. But all the heroes are not fictitious. There is some mythical heroes. Indeed, myths are often based on heroes. There are imagined stories frequently with a hero. Myths and heroes are timeless. Then, as the document seen in class “What is a myth?”. Myth is based on traditions. Compared to superheroes, not everyone knows the myths. They are different with the culture, religion or the country where we live. They evolve through time and some details of the ancient myths are often changed and modernized. Finally, a hero is not always a fictitious person, there are heroes of everyday. Everyone can be a hero. You just have to do an act which help people without any selfish thoughts. Heroes of everyday are fighting for peace but they are helping people too. They give some food to the poorest part of the population and they treat the sick people. But an everyday hero can be someone which is fighting for human rights. Heroes of everyday can also be firemen who are fighting to save lives. But nurses and doctors too because they take care of us at the hospital. Or the policemen and gendarmes who are keeping the safety, they maintain the peace, they are our true superheroes. In fact, in the movie “The Butler” that we studied, the butler's son, Louis is fighting for black people's rights. He's part of a civil right movement called 'The Black Panthers' and he wants that the segregation disappear. He's not afraid to give his life to save each others. He wanted more rights and more liberties for black people. He wanted the same rights for white and black, that's why he is a hero. Barack Obama too can be defined as a hero, he was the first black president of the USA and he worked to fight against the racism. A hero can also be an icon or a role model like an actor, a singer or other, they can bring a positive message and spread it because of their influence worldwide. To conclude we can say that everyone has his own definition of a myth and a hero because of his experience and his point of view....
