2-2 Final Project One Milestone One: Introduction of a Successful Company SNHU Adam Hernandez

Introduction Southwest Airlines is a nationally known airline that provides low airfares to consumers looking to travel domestically within the United States. Southwest was established on March 15, 1967, in San Antonio, Texas. Publicly, Southwest has been known for its flexibility with low airfares, included baggage, and exemplary customer service. With close to 58,000 employees, Southwest’s promise helps keep them around; “Southwest will provide a stable work environment with equal opportunity for learning and personal growth. Employees will be provided the same concern, respect, and caring attitude within the organization that they are expected to share externally with every Southwest Customer” (“About Southwest”, 2021). In recent years, Southwest has made the effort to offer some improvements to help keep their mission and vision statements true. Southwest's vision statement is, "To be the world's most loved, most efficient, and most profitable airline" ("Culture," 2021). According to Evans (2019), This corporate vision statement reflects the company’s long-term strategic plans for global operations, and guides strategic decisions in growing the enterprise, especially beyond its current main market in the United States. Southwest has tried to reach the global market by attracting business travelers with the implementation of actions such as offering their customers the option of Business Select and Early-Bird Check-in. According to CEO Gary Kelly Southwest does “6% or 7% of our boardings by Business Select, [and] probably more than double that by EarlyBird.” And the combined direct revenues from the program were nearly $295 million in 2013 (Evans, 2019).

Southwest's mission statement is, "Connect people to what's important in their lives through friendly, reliable, and low-cost air travel" ("Culture," 2021). Southwest’s mission statement starts with how they treat their employees. Southwest Airlines Co. prioritizes customer service in its mission statement, along with employee behavioral factors related to the company’s organizational culture (Evans, 2019). Because Southwest focuses on keeping their employees happy, “the average tenure of a Southwest employee is 11.5 years and, with 55,000 employees, turnover hovers around 2.5 percent” (Spiegelberg, 2017). Southwest’s employees treat their customers the same way that the company treats them as employees.
