PURPOSE OF MEDICATION
Expected Pharmacological Action Ondansetron is in a class of medications called serotonin 5-HT3 receptor antagonists. It works by blocking the action of serotonin, a natural substance that may cause nausea and vomiting.
Therapeutic Use To prevent nausea and vomiting From chemotherapy, and post-op.
Complications Dizziness, fatigue, headache, fever, agitation, anxiety, Arrhythmias, chest pain. Constipation, diarrhea. Hypoxia. Pruritus, chills.
Medication Administration Ondansetron 4 mg IV Stat
Contraindications/Precautions Contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to drug. ECG changes, including prolonged QT interval and torsades de pointes, have been reported. Avoid use in patients with congenital long QT syndrome. Monitor patient carefully.
Interactions
Nursing Interventions Monitor the patient's EKG Correct electrolyte abnormalities (hypokalemia or hypomagnesemia) before infusing drug.
Apomorphine: May cause profound hypotension and loss of consciousness.
Client Education Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness May increase ALT and AST levels. Assess the patient's GI tract and assess the patient's level of n/v.
