PURPOSE OF MEDICATION
Expected Pharmacological Action Blocks effects of serotonin at 5-HT3 receptor sites located in vagal nerve terminals and chemoreceptor trigger zone in the CNS.
Therapeutic Use Decreased incidence and severity of nausea and vomiting follow chemotherapy or surgery.
Complications Serotonin syndrome, headache, dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, weakness, torsades de pointes, Steven Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis.
Medication Administration PO, IM, IV not to exceed 8 mg per day in patients with hepatic impairment. PO. 8 mg prior to radiation and then every 12 hrs.
Contraindications/Precautions Contradicted and hypersensitivity, orally disintegrating tablets contain aspartame and should not be used in patients with phenylketonuria.
Interactions
Nursing Interventions Monitor ECG and patients with hypokalemia, Monitor for signs and symptoms of serotonin syndrome (hallucinations mental status change),
use with apomorphine increases risk of severe hypotension and loss of consciousness, concurrent use contradicted.
Client Education Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness Prevention of nausea and vomiting.
