Description

Occupational Outlook Handbook (OOH)- Rachel Redington

Part 1: 20 points What is your major(s) or intended major(s)? What kind of other academic credential do you plan to add (e.g. minor, certificate, specialized study, honors)? My major is Interdisciplinary Social Science here at Florida State University with a minor in International Affairs. I plan on trying to finish my degree with a high GPA and adding to my resume with internships in the communication and real estate fields. Why did you choose that major(s)? Specifically address opportunity cost and comparative advantage when explaining your choice. [Note: A full-credit answer requires more than a phrase or one sentence] I chose my major because I started off as a political science major then wanted to switch over to a more broad major. I thought this was a smart move because this major encompasses communication, economics, psychology, and political science. The opportunity cost would be to take a different major and spend my time and money elsewhere, but I have a comparative advantage in my current major because it will allow me to have a wider range of career opportunities. What kind of job do you expect to get after graduating from FSU with that major(s)? After I graduate from FSU I could either get a job as an economist, marketing manager, or political scientist. As a back up plan, I could also become a social worker. All of these jobs spark my interests.

What do you expect to earn for an annual starting salary? Ten years after graduation, what do you expect to earn for an annual salary? I expect my starting salary to be at least 35K in any of these professions. Ten years after graduation, I would like my salary to be at least 50-60K.

Part 2: 20 points Go to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Occupational Outlook Handbook (https://www.bls.gov/ooh/) and pick one occupation of interest given your major, talents, or hobbies. There are a variety of ways to explore jobs on the web site. You can navigate through the occupation groups on the left side or browse for a particular job on the bottom-middle of the page. If a specific job you want doesn’t appear, find a close substitute. Then answer the following questions. What seems to be the most appealing aspect of the work environment? This may seem odd to others, but traveling to meet with clients and representatives is the most appealing aspect of the work environment of a marketing manager for me. I think this would allow me to step out of the office and expand in my career. What education is required to obtain that occupation?

The education that is required to obtain the occupation of a marketing manager is a bachelor’s degree. You can get a masters degree but it is not necessary. What kind of advancement opportunities exist for that occupation? The advancement opportunities that exist for a marketing manager include making more money as you increase revenue for a company/product. You can also work as an advertising manager and promotion manager because all three careers are so closely intertwined. This allows advancement through marketing management. With more success, you could potentially take on more projects or start your own business.

What is the median annual wage? Is this more or less than what you expected from Part 1 above? The median annual wage for marketing managers in 2020 was $142,170. This number is way higher than my predicted salary from Part 1. I know that it will take some time to work up to six figures but at least I will have a good income to look forward to!...
