Description

Megan Limbeck Kimberly Chamberlain English 101 November 1st, 2019 Op-Ed Outline: Thank you for not smoking: a vaping persuasion Claim: Hastily forming new regulations and bans for vaping is worse for everyone. Organization: The Refutation Approach 1. Introduction: Introduce the Issue a. Define vaping b. Present the issue of bans rolling out with no regard to both sides of the story (ie. the pros of vaping) c. Maybe give a general statistic 2. Body Paragraph 1: Op-Ed 1: FDA should drive a wedge between teens & vaping a. https://link.gale.com/apps/doc/A554511669/OVIC? u=mcc_gateway&sid=OVIC&xid=ec8b546a i.

“ Any benefits of converting adult cigarette smokers to e-cigarettes is outweighed by harmful effects to addicting future generations of kids who otherwise would have never smoked”

b. Refute: “Regulating e-cigarettes requires a scalpel, not a hammer” c. https://link.gale.com/apps/doc/A599719387/OVIC? u=mcc_gateway&sid=OVIC&xid=4e064d5b i.

Research suggests that a ban on flavors will drive some adults back to smoking cigarettes

3. Body Paragraph 2: Op-Ed 2: The FDA should let e-cigarettes help adults -- but not hook kids a. https://link.gale.com/apps/doc/A537700750/OVIC? u=mcc_gateway&sid=OVIC&xid=4e07945d i.

“The sooner the FDA's rules are clear and in full force, the better”

b. Refute: Why such a negative view of vaping? c. https://link.gale.com/apps/doc/A452522329/OVIC? u=mcc_gateway&sid=OVIC&xid=a70c7d2d i.

Physicians recommended that the devices be promoted as such, urging regulators to tread carefully so as not to limit their potential to reduce harm.

4. Body Paragraph 3: Position and Evidence a. Restate issue of bans in motion with no regard to studies showing how vapes can be used in positive applications b. Op-ed 1 says “the FDA should ban e-cigarettes before more teens get addicted and more health problems emerge.” i.

NYU source: “A growing body of research points to using harm reduction for smoking cessation. While quitting smoking—or never starting—is ideal, if you’re going to smoke, you can minimize your exposure to the toxins in cigarettes by switching to safer nicotine products like ecigarettes.”

ii.

NYU source also uses prohibition failing miserable as an example against bans like such

c. Op-ed 2 says “Anti-smoking advocates welcomed the FDA's sudden regulatory offensive. But they warned that it is not enough.” i.

Harvard source states “Among those assigned to vaping, 18% had stopped smoking, while about 10% of those using nicotine replacement therapy had quit.”

ii.

Clearly shows that in said study vaping fared as a better alternative to other smoking cessation methods.

d. https://www.fda.gov/tobacco-products/products-ingredientscomponents/vaporizers-e-cigarettes-and-other-electronic-nicotine-deliverysystems-ends i.

FDA: These products use an “e-liquid” that may contain nicotine, as well as varying compositions of flavorings, propylene glycol (PG), vegetable glycerin (VG), and other ingredients. The liquid is heated to create an aerosol that the user inhales.

ii.

FDA states that PG and VG are safe for inhalation

5. Conclusion: including a call to action a. We need more studies to determine the health risks, but bans won’t allow that. b. FDA should focus on making sure ALL nicotine products are regulated and shown as less appealing c. Banning vapes runs the risk of creating new smokers for the tobacco industry d. We need to fight for harm reduction and keeping access to better alternatives.
