PHIL11OG Paper #1

In Marilyn Frye’s article ‘Oppression’ she looks for ways to define ‘Oppression” that imposes how women are oppressed as women, but men are not oppressed as men. If a woman has a problem or caught in a situation no matter what she decides to do there would always be difficulties in her way to intrude to make her choices her own way. She believes that these are obstacles that are difficult to recognize and understand them as part of an order and because of the tries made to avoid causing any destructive situations. That arrangement goes to men as well, but as a unity will be helpful at the end and benefit them. According to Frye, this is related to the ideas of suffering and being restricted. The person being restricted it prevents them from having or has limits of their own freedom. When it comes to women, they are not allowed to go out late at night, they have make less money at jobs, they have to be the women of the house, they can’t do as they please. On the restrictions they must suffer, plus the harm it must take over you that can result effecting your own behavior or action. Women suffer so much the outcome of this was losing their own power of their rights and less economic rights. The struggles they went through are not small harms, they are very harsh situations involving many around. Women fronted these restrictions while others are getting pleased on what’s being done to them. They are forced by social structures and have a strong belief that things would change one day and even with the law, women got to face the consequences for being women. Men take advantage of the situation and gain from it.

Oppression is an unequal use of authority, law or any physical force to prevent others from having freedom. Exclusion is related to oppression by not allowing someone or something to take part in anything. I believe according to all 4 Authors they relate as humans one way or another they all suffer irritation, have limits to what they want to do, or go through and experience unexpected obstacles. Exclusion is involved in this situation because oppression takes over them and don’t let them do or decide for themselves what they want to do, be themselves or except themselves for who they are. As much as they try to be or do anything is not okay and can cause more severe harm then from what they are already going through. As the author Frye says “Many of the restrictions and limitations we live with are more or less internalized and self-monitored and are part of our adaptions to the requirements or expectations imposed by the needs and tastes and tyrannies of others.” (Frye 15) It’s on them to do as what they want from the restrictions and limits or one mistake from one person can lead to consequences to themselves and everyone else around them. The live and accept the lack of freedom and independence life they have and accepting them to not make things any more tough then what it already is....
