Expected Pharmacological Action Mannitol promotes diuresis in kidneys by increasing the concentration of filtrates in the kidney and blocking reabsorption of water by kidney tubules.

Therapeutic Use Mannitol is a diuretic used to force urine production in people with acute (sudden) kidney failure. Mannitol injection is also used to reduce swelling and pressure inside the eye or around the brain.

Complications confusion, tachycardia headache, vascular overload blurred vision rhinitis chest pain pulmonary edema hyperkalemia, hypokalemia Adverse reactions: seizures, heart failure

Medication Administration I.V I.V injection

Contraindications/Precautions Contraindicated inn patients with hypersensitivity, anuria, dehydration, active intracranial bleeding, severe pulmonary edema or congestion.

Interactions magnesium chloride. magnesium citrate. magnesium hydroxide. magnesium oxide. magnesium sulfate.

Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness

Nursing Interventions -Monitor vital signs, urine output, CVP, and pulmonary artery pressures before and hourly throughout administration. -Assess pt for anorexia, mucle weakness, numbness, tingling, parenthesia, confusion. -Monitor neurologic status and increased intracranial pressure.

Client Education Explain purpose of therapy to patient.

*Reduction of intracranial pressure. *reduction of intraocular pressure. *Irrigation during transurethral prostate resection.
