Summary

We had to do this again but go see a musical of our choice, then write about what we thought about it....

Description

Kelsey Other Musical Response The other musical I went, and saw was at my community theatre called Heritage Theatre. The name of the musical was Miracle On 34th Street. It was directed by Marilyn Olsen Whipple. The playwright was Valentine Davies. This play is about a character named Kris Kringle who is Santa Claus that has been around for hundreds of years. He likes to spend his time spreading good cheer and bringing gifts to one and all. The guys in this musical try to convince everyone that there isn’t really a Santa Claus, but there really is a Santa Claus. Santa Claus may not be real, but he is fun to visit with children. One of my favorite things was the theme of the story. That meant to me that even though Santa Claus isn’t real, he and Jesus Christ are the reasons why we have Christmas. It also taught me that since Santa is nice to everyone, that we should also be kind to everyone because holidays are meant to be happy. As far as the acting goes, I felt like the cast, when it came to be singing and dancing, weren’t relaxed because they were nervous, which is why they were tight. It showed their stage freight. The one who played Kris Kringle in this play did an amazing job because I felt like he sounded just like the character from the actual movie. All the other cast members did well too. With directing, I don’t feel like the director did well. She had her cast members stand too tightly on the stage and didn’t tell them that the movement would be better if they relaxed, because a musical is meant to be fun and not scary. The singing was sort of off pitch, but I could tell the cast tried their best, and did well with what they had.

The sounds in this musical were quite entertaining. Some were scary, but also, they seemed realistic to the scenes. What I liked about the sounds was they made you feel like you were part of the show and that you were in the place that they were in, in your imagination. Some of the background effects also, to me, affected the character’s voices because I could tell they could imagine what it would be like if they were in the character’s shoes from the movie. The reacting in some scenes scared me somewhat, but I could tell it was realistic. The things that did not seem successful to me were the ways the cast sang and danced because the singing for some cast members was pitchy, and the dancing could have been a bit smoother. I felt like it was too big where they were stomping their feet like they were angry. The director could have told them to relax and to remember they’re having fun and not worry about what people will think of them. The way they told the story as far as the scenes could have been more organized. Compared to other shows that I’ve seen like this one, I have liked others better. This director I think needs more practice in directing so her shows can look better, more organized, and look more like the story. I liked that it was also different from others I’d seen. For those that like shows that are unorganized or something that doesn’t tell the story in order is who I would recommend that would like this if it helps them understand the storyline better. Otherwise I wouldn’t recommend this to anybody. In closing, my expectations for this performance weren’t met. I felt that this musical was not my very favorite that I’d ever seen and felt like it was sort of boring. I have learned what the story was sort of like, but I know not to be in any shows directed by this person....
