Description

Joshua Brott November 12, 2020 WRA 101-096 Money Management From police officer to astronaut, I have always been conflicted on my career of choice and have struggled to decide what I want to do with my life after college. This was until I began working at Meadowbrook Country Club. Working at Meadowbrook showed me prime examples of successful lawyers, doctors, business owners, accountants and so many other jobs. Through countless hours of working for and talking to these people I determined one job stands apart more than any other to me… Financial Management. A member at Meadowbrook that I was able to interview was Daniel Walsh. Mr. Walsh currently serves as Chairman of Kinsale Company, a private-based holding company of industrial manufacturing and distribution companies. During our interview, Dan stated that reading and writing has always been a great majority of his work. Dan took rigorous writing based classes throughout college to prepare himself for the work. Dan graduated from the University of Notre Dame with an MS in Finance, from Xavier University with an MBA, and attended Hillsdale College where he studied Liberal Arts. Mr. Walsh has advised and worked with such companies as Dover Corporation, Touchstone, Kenwood Capital, Steel Technologies, Contech Engineered Solutions, HF Holdings, Ryder Integrated Logistics, and General Cable. His work within these companies was done with a strong expertise in strategic planning and execution, business planning, and financial executive leadership.

During my interview with Dan Walsh I first asked him about what he learned through his college education and what areas he developed after graduating. His response was simply, “In college I was writing all of these papers that were 15, 20, 50 pages that I was getting good grades on just for me to get in trouble my first week as an operator for writing to the wrong audience… I was always able to write in college because I had the same audience for all of my papers but that was because I had been writing to the same audience my whole life. I didn’t know how to write to my coworkers professionally, I didn’t know how to properly send an email to my boss at the time, I only knew how to write for a teacher to grade.” Dan’s response to this question opened my eyes to my current learning and ways that I will have to begin to transition my style of writing to be malleable to fit for not only different prompts but also for different audiences. I asked Mr. Walsh what reading and writing looked like in the financing field and he said, “On a day-to-day basis most of my reading at work consists of analyzing different graphs and charts but often I have to read proposals from clients, banking statements, and daily checks from subsidiaries to ensure our company’s well being. My writing is consistent. It involves analyzing data and turning it into a presentation that people with lesser statistics skills are able to understand. I also have to write evaluations of my employees. These evaluations have to be tedious and certain because I am determining if somebody is going to continue to have a job. There is no room for errors in my because of the large population that is affected by my company.” Being able to understand and analyze writing seems to be more important than I expected. The reading skills we are taught in school are shown in the business world

but in unexpected ways. Outside of this interview, I have spent a lot of time throughout high I have spent time studying financing within businesses. Reading and writing skills look extremely different in finance then in other areas within business. In financing, a persons job is to get money for a company to produce their product/service and then to continue and continue to grow. The reading and writing skills necessary to be successful in financing lead to improved communications, a stronger relationship with the people you are working for, as well as attracting more clients. Strong writing sets people apart from their peers. “Recent research proves that written communication skills are at the top of employers' wish lists. According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers, 73.4% of employers want a candidate with strong written communication skills. Written communication was the number three most desired quality overall, behind leadership skills and ability to work as a team member (Moore, Inc.com).” This quote shows employers method of selecting the strongest candidate for a job and that writing skills is a major part of what is considered before hiring a person for a job. Reading and writing in the business world looks different then anywhere else. Writing in business must be detailed and extremely decisive in order to not result in the loss of employees, clients, or even an entire business. The reading skills needed to be successful in the business realm are that you must be able to understand someone’s tone in order to understand why they wrote what they did. Not having strong reading and writing skills is detrimental to the success of any professional but the loss of money, jobs, and products is the risk that makes reading and writing in financing so important.
