Nicole Zaza English 1302 20 June 2015 Degrading or First Amendment? Susan Brownmiller’s “ Let’s Put Pornography Back in the Closet” starts off the essay with freedom of speech and sets the tone for the rest of the essay. Brownmiller’s main point was to show the argument of protecting the first amendment, but how disrespectful and degrading pornography is to women. Pornography objectifies women, Brownmiller a known feminist didn’t agree with how people argue that pornography is protected under the first amendment. The target audience for this article was women and people that agree with pornography not being protected by the first amendment. Brownmiller used various modes throughout the essay. Four common modes included: exemplification, compare/contrast, cause/effect, and description. In paragraph eleven (p.62-63) Brownmiller, uses the mode of exemplification. Brownmiller uses examples of how the porn industry has grown into an industry worth millions. New technology has helped the porn industry become a multimilliondollar empire. The writer uses a logos appeal during this paragraph. If technology has improved, then so has the power of pornography, because now pornography has so many options on how its being displayed. It can be displayed in books, magazine, movies, Internet websites, etc. The author is implying that because of the advantages of technology, pornography has benefited from it and she doesn’t agree with pornography.

Nicole Zaza English 1302 20 June 2015 The second mode, description is being used in the fourth paragraph (p.61). Browmiller is using a description of the Supreme Court’s decision with the Miller v. California case. During this time period, free speech was being strengthened in judicial courts; laws that were considered disrespectful were going through an extensive reconsideration. If, the law was going under reconsideration, because of the nation’s obscenity laws, then pornography or anything sexual should stay in the bedroom. Brownmiller is using a logos appeal. She wants the audience to see her logic and that’s why she includes the Miller v. California case. In the following paragraph (p.61), Browmiller uses the cause and effect mode. In 1934, James Joyce’s “Ulysses” went to court, because it was thought that Joyce’s piece of literature was pornographic, but was proven it was not, and because of that other literature works were declared not offensive and not pornographic. Browmiller uses a pathos appeal, because at the end of the paragraph she says, “ I shudder to think how my book would have fared if James Joyce, D.H. Lawrence, and Henry miller hadn’t gone before me.” She wants to let the audience know that she thinks things would have gone differently if these literature works had been banned. The last mode, compare and contrast was found early in the essay, paragraph two (p.61). The author is comparing the 1950s and the 1960s. In the 1950s, where times where cold and dark, and people believed in the doctrine of free will. In the 1960s, times were brighter and chaotic, and the value of protecting disliked political speech was increasingly reinforced. Brownmiller is comparing and contrasting two different

In the 1950s times were dark and cold, and in the 1960s times were not as dark. This article has all types or ranges and all types of rhetorical modes that work together. The author wanted to make sure that her audience knew why she was writing this article, why as a feminist she believed so strongly that pornography was a horrific thing....
