Paraphrasing Tips CAPS: 4 Easy Steps to Paraphrasing 1.

Comprehend : First, simply work on comprehending the quote or passage you want to

paraphrase for your paper - this is the greater part of the battle. You need to simply understand the passage without adding extraneous information or leaving something important out. Read the passage over and over again. 2.

Audibly Explain: When you feel as though you have the meaning of the quote or

passage down pat, practice explaining it. You should aim to explain it to an audience of adults who may not be familiar with the topic. You could practice by explaining the quote or passage to your partner or friend. Does the listener understand when you explain the passage? If not, then you may need to reread the passage again or take notes on the passage until you understand it, then you can try explaining it again. 3.

Practice: Now it is time to practice writing the paraphrased passage. Re-read it once you

have written it. Does it capture the essence of the quote or passage? Does it simply replace words in the passage, or does it create a new understanding of the information contained in the passage? It should create a new understanding of the passage. A word for word swap is like a poor foreign language translation—the words could be correctly translated, but the meaning may not be. 4.

Scribe: After following these steps, you can now put the passage into your paper. You will

want to create an effective signal phrase to introduce it. Also, always cite the paraphrased passage (in-text citation) in order to avoid plagiarizing....
