Topic 2: Media Analysis Worksheet Directions: Watch a film or television show, listen to a radio program, or read a short story with an identified main character. Answer the following questions with a minimum of 250 words each. 1. What is the name of the show/movie/story and who was the main character examined? The name of the show that I have watched for this media analysis worksheet homework is Lucifer. An American fantasy television series that premiered on Fox on January 25, 2016. This show gives a new perspective towards our knowing about the devil through religion. The show keeps the same morals but also de-villainizes the devil in certain aspects. The main character that is being examined from this show is the devil himself, Lucifer Morningstar. The series focuses on the charming, charismatic and devilishly handsome Lucifer Morningstar, a powerful angel who was cast out of heaven for his betrayal and sent to hell to rule over demons and damned, sinful souls. As he gets bored and unhappy as the lord of hell, Lucifer resigns from his throne and abandon his kingdom and move to Los Angeles to own and run a nightclub called “Lux”. He then becomes involved in a murder case of a beautiful popstar outside of his nightclub and subsequently invited to be a consultant to the LAPD because of his ability to get humans to confess their deepest, darkest desires. 2. Briefly describe the conflict the main character experienced, what drove the story? The conflicts that the main character experienced and drove the story for this TV series are that the devil (Lucifer Morningstar) has grown bored reigning over hell. He then left hell and settles in Los Angeles to own and run a nightclub called “lux” to indulge in his favorite things such as women, drinking alcohol and music. Heaven or God disagrees with Lucifer’s decision and sends Lucifer’s brother Amenadiel to convince him to return and rule over hell once again. Additionally, while enjoying his retirement at his newly found home, Lucifer gets involved in a murder of a beautiful popstar outside of his nightclub. For the first time Lucifer feels something has awaken deep within him as a result of this murder. It seems that after many years the devil himself started feeling compassion or sympathy for others and that very thought disturbs him. While dealing with the murder he meets Detective Decker who also becomes a personal conflict within his story. Throughout the show we see Lucifer have to decide between doing what he believes to be right or doing what is right according to the humans around him.

3. Using Freud’s theory, what psychodynamic structures (id, ego, and superego) were in conflict, what were the desires of each structure? e.g., A boy’s Id may want the boy to ask a girl out but his Ego might resist the urge because he could get turned down and feel hurt. © 2019. Although Lucifer is technically a fallen angel, the pleasure principle is automatically set in him. Lucifer’s ID shows whenever he starts getting curious about something. Lucifer has a fascination with sex and human desires so much so that he embarks on an investigation into the murder a beautiful popstar that he mentored. This also leads to his fascination towards his newfound partner Detective Decker from LAPD as they try to solve the popstar’s murder. Lucifer then determines that he has to sleep with the detective to get that fascination to end. Although, the problem with this scenario is that the Detective did not want to sleep with him even though Lucifer has all his devilish charm and no human can resist it that bring hurts to the devil’s ego. Lucifer’s superego shows a take on religion and gives it a new perspective. He (Lucifer) is mostly known for all the wrong doings in the world such as sins, wars, etc. however, as he spends more time on earth lucifer starts to have a better sense of right and wrong. Such as, although Lucifer (the devil) has the ability to tempt human beings to potentially do something wrong or sinful, ultimately humans have their own free will that lets them choose which decision or way they should go. In short, the devil cannot be blamed for all the mankind’s choices. The main character’s ego is starting to develop that sense of reality as he realizes that things can’t always go the way he wants them to be.

4. Review psychoanalytic defense mechanisms, identify and describe three defenses used by any of the characters in the show. The main character in the series shows almost all the types of defense mechanisms. Although, the three defenses that are prominent within the main character of this series are displacement, compartmentalization and denial. Lucifer uses displacement as a defense mechanism whenever he encounters situations that he does not know how to handle such as when dealing with his family issues he tends to lash out on the people on the cases that he is working currently on. He also tends to place the blame for his problems onto other people never really being able to take responsibility for the things he has done or not done. Lucifer also uses compartmentalization as a defense mechanism when situations in his life tends to be more difficult and blocks off that element to allow him to carry on without facing any of the challenges. Lucifer runs from his problems often and will even avoid the most important people in his life if it means he doesn’t have to deal with conflict. Lastly, lucifer uses denial as his major defense mechanism. Lucifer uses denial in situations that has something to do with his feelings. For example, when the detective kissed him, he immediately consulted to his counselor about what happen and stated that the detective is scared of her feelings and not him. When in reality he is the one who is in denial that he is scared and not her. He is in denial of his feelings and never listen to his therapist. Additionally, in most of the situations that he is in sessions he translates the subject to his own terms.

5. Using Adler’s Individual psychotherapy, briefly describe how feelings of inferiority may contribute to the conflict in the media observed. Lucifer was cast into hell by God (his father) because of his rebellion. For this reason, Lucifer has always felt like the black sheep of the family. It is because of these feeling of inferiority that Lucifer feels that everything always has to go his way and that he always has to get what he wants. That’s why when Detective Decker does not fall for his charm and want to sleep with him, he continues to pursue her and think that there must be something wrong. Throughout the series Lucifer sees a therapist who tries to help Lucifer see who he really is as a person and how he truly fits in to the world around him.
