Pentateuch Reflection Paper Outline Old Testament Survey BIL101 1. What is Leviticus about? a. Theme: “God graciously provides a way for people to live in His presence” (The Bible Project) b. Key Words: i. Law—how to love God and love one another ii. Holy—receiving God’s forgiveness should be followed by holy living and spiritual growth 1. “to be separated from sin and set apart exclusively to the Lord for his purpose, in his service and for his glory” (NIV Study Bible) 2. Lev. 11:44-45 “be hoy because I am holy (1 Peter 1:15-16) 3. “everything about him is perfect… his love, judgment, discipline… all his characteristics are perfect and perfectly balanced” (Lennox 114) 4. need for personal holiness in response to our holy God c. How to be holy i. Holy through sacrifice (scapegoat) 1. Sacrifice to express gratitude: grain & fellowship offering 2. Atonement for sin: burnt, purification, & restitution offering ii. Holy through cleanliness 1. “By avoiding [unclean things], the Israelites would be less likely to slip into false religions” (Lennox 105) 2. Three purposes: (The Bible Project) a. Forgive acts of sin and spare people’s lives b. Show the world that Israel was God’s holy ambassador to the earth c. Day of Atonement: “God places special emphasis on the day of atonement, a sacrifice that covers any sins unaddressed after the other offerings. Two goats: purification offering to atone for the sins of Israel & the scapegoat as a symbol of God’s removal of sin from Israel (The Bible Project) d. Call to Covenant Faithfulness (ch26-27) i. Obedience  peace & abundance in the Lord
