Rin Aduna CMST 101 Outline for PERSUASIVE Speech

PART ONE: Specific Purpose Statement To persuade my audience to make donations to the ASPCA. PART TWO: Speech Sections Introduction Attention getter: How many of you have dogs? What about cats? I’m not going to put Sarah McLachlan’s song in the background, but there are animals in America who need your help. According to Rescueink, 10,000 dogs die each year from dog fighting (r escueink.org) [STATISTIC] This is just one form of abuse amongst many others. They can be treated like punching bags or disposable tools, but they are actually companions or family members that deserve to be loved and treated well. Even if you don’t have a pet, I’m sure you all enjoy looking at cute animals off the internet. Why not contribute to their happiness? Topic statement: Tonight, I’m going to talk about why you should donate to the ASPCA. Body Main Point #1: Animal cruelty has become a problem, despite the fact that they are animals, violence is violence towards these vulnerable creatures. Sub points: ●

According to the Humanesociety, based on the recorded 1,423 cruelty cases in the U.S., 70.1% were dogs, 20.9% were cats, and 24.1% involved other animals. These are just recorded cases, but there are many other unrecorded  cases as well. [STATISTIC] Huffington Post reports a Chihuahua named Chunky was tortured for 48 hours: The puppy was “set on fire, punched and attacked until his neck broke, and dumped in a rubbish tip to die” (Huffington Post-RSPCA). Animals may not be the same as humans, but they experience physical and emotional damage just as WE do. Some people see them as lesser beings with little similarities to humans; they assume that treating them badly is okay. [QUOTE] According to Peter Singer, compared to humans, animals “have a less developed cerebral cortex, the part of the brain that concerns thinking functions, the Emotions and Feelings are in the diencephalon which is well developed in species of animals like mammals.” This affirms the fact that they will experience the pain of being beaten, burnt, starved until ribs show, or forced into blood sports just for entertainment.

 nimals, we can still help by providing them with Transition: Even though we can’t help All a resources needed to live a healthy life. Main Point #2: These helpless animals need your financial support Sub points: ● You can visit the ASPCA site to make a one-time donation ranging from a LOW $25 to high $500. Drew Barrymore, Kyle Chandler (from Grey’s Anatomy) and Martha Stewart donated to the ASPCA based on a list from l ooktothestars.org. ● Forbes estimates that the cost of keeping a large dog PER YEAR can amount to “at least $1,570 a year” to pay for “food, vet visits, training, medical insurance” and more(forbes.com). According to p  eteducation.com, the high yearly cost of having a cat can add up to $1,169 for the same necessities (p  eteducation.com). [FACT] ● The ASPCA managed to accumulate $14 million to animal welfare Organizations (based on the ASPCA website). That amount of money can provide animals with the resources they desperately need. Transition: $14 million is an impressive amount, but even that amount can only provide for so many animals. Even small donations contribute to saving animals. Main Point #3: Benefits of making donations to the ASPCA. Sub points: ● Rescue stories from ASPCA : Blue, dog-fighting victim who was rescued by Vivian. He weighed only 30 lbs when he was found during a dog fighting raid. Thanks to the ASPCA and Vivian, he’s able to connect with people and play with his rope toy instead of fighting for his life while people spectate. ● QUOTE - “In many ways, he represents the thousands of dogs who have been rescued from abuse and who refuse to be defined by their traumatic past. Blue never gave up, just as we will never give up our commitment to ending dog fighting.” ^Website: https://www.aspca.org/news/aspca-happy-tails-blues-story Conclusion Signal: Tonight I spoke to you about the ASPCA and why you should donate to their worthy cause.. Summary: ● Animal abuse is a continuous problem; they are physically and emotionally abused and are perfect targets because we’re much stronger than them. ● Money donations to the ASPCA site can provide animals with food, water, and other crucial resources. ● With your contributions, abused animals can have a chance at experiencing a comfortable life just like Blue.

Clincher statement: Henry Bergh established the ASPCA to protect the animals in the US who are victims to cruelty. Milan Kundera states that “Humanity’s true moral test, its fundamental test…consists of its attitude towards those who are at its mercy: animals” (g  oodreads.com). A donation from you can mean life or death for these animals; the ASPCA can continue to rescue animals like Blue, giving them a chance to enjoy life instead wondering if they’ll live to see another day.
