Topic: Family Medical Leave Act General Purpose: To persuade Specific Purpose: To persuade the audience that the US must implement a more comprehensive federal Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) policy to allow paid time off for new parents, ill individuals, and caretakers. Thesis Statement: The US has a responsibility to implement a more robust Federal Family Medical Leave Act to protect its citizens’ livelihood in the event of unexpected, long-term illness or newfound parental responsibilities. Main Point 1 (problem): The US is the only first world country that does not offer paid family or medical leave. Problems or Causes Subpoint 1: For mothers, returning too soon can pose health risks especially if there were complications with birth. Early involvement from both parents is crucial. Effects Subpoint 1: Many cannot afford this “luxury” and have a financial burden that pressures them to return to work before they are ready causing physical and emotional strain. Subpoint 2: Workers become resentful and distracted if they feel they are missing out on important milestones (firsts for parents and lasts for caretakers). Main Point 3: Offering 12 weeks of paid leave is the way that the US can protect its citizens and offer the most humane treatment to employees.

Solutions Subpoint 1 : Employee morale and loyalty increase when there is greater job and income security. Subpoint 2: In CA and NY, they have paid leave programs that have shown success and economic sustainability (soon being rolled out in MA, WA, NJ, etc.).
