Pharmacognosy What is Pharmacognosy? Definition The subject or applied science that deals with the biological, biochemical, therapeutic and economic features of natural drugs and their chemical constituents. Pharmacognosy is concerned with the study of crude drugs of plant and animal origin. The term Materia Medica is used to refer to all substances used in medicine such as pure chemical compounds, herbal drugs, mineral substances and biological preparations. Pharmacognosy involved a comprehensive study of individual’s drugs and elucidation of general principles. The word Pharmacognosy was used by C.A. seydler in 1815. It is a Greek word Pharmakon means drug and gnocy mean knowledge. At present Pharmacognosy involves the study of crude drugs and their natural derivatives like
