COURSE SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS, EXPECTATIONS, POLICIES:

PHY 241

1) PHY 241 is an intensive laboratory course that will require your presence and focus two hours each week in the lab conducting the assigned experiment as part of a group AND approximately two hours of focused work outside of class writing your portion of the Lab Report. 2) “Completing a lab” requires both being present to take data AND writing the assigned portion of the lab assignment. If you choose not to complete both requirements for a lab you will receive a zero on the entire lab. Students who do not complete at least NINE labs will automatically receive an E for the semester. 3) Each class group members will be assigned one of three roles which will rotate with each new lab. Most weeks you will complete a worksheet which clearly outlines the questions for each role. When writing a report please use “Rubric and Example for Lab Reports” file found under “Reference Materials” in Canvas. Groups will be changed after approximately five experiments. a. Researcher (R) – During class time, the researcher is primarily responsible for operating the laboratory equipment and taking measurements. At the end of the lab, the Researcher should make sure the other groupmates are able to operate the equipment. b. Data Analyst (DA) – During class time, the Data Analyst is primarily responsible for recording data into Excel and typing formulae in Excel. The DA is primarily responsible for the data tables and graphs to ensure that all data is legible, has appropriate units, and is properly labeled. c. Principal Investigator (PI) – During class time, the PI assists the other two roles and attempts to maintain the “big picture” to keep the group moving in a productive direction. 4) Make Up Lab. Every Friday from 9 to 3, CP 165 (and CP 163) will be open and available for groups to finish experiments, discuss results with a TA, or complete an experiment that was missed due to an excused absence. Please make sure you sign in so we have a record that you attended the make up session. 5) Lab manuals, templates, and all other instructions can be found on Canvas under “Modules.” 6) Lab reports that are turned in late are assessed a 10% penalty per weekday that they are late to the entire group. 7) If you believe that your lab has been graded unfairly, you will have two weeks after receiving the report to ask for it to be regraded by your TA. If there is still evidence of unfair grading please bring your report to Dr. Ankrah in CP 135. 8) Laboratory Safety: Please read, sign, and return the Safety Sheet for Introductory Physics Labs, found at the end of this Syllabus. 9) Cell Phones: Cell phones are the best and worst tool available in the physics lab. Capturing a rapid experiment on slow motion video can be an invaluable reference when analyzing data or writing the lab report. Students who are disengaged during the laboratory time because of texting, phone calls, etc. will see penalties to the “Supports the Team” portion of their score. 10) Cheating: Copying reports from Chegg or from other students in whole or part is expressly forbidden and will be penalized according to the University policy outlined in https://www.uky.edu/Ombud/ForStudents_AcademicIntegrity.php.

Prelab/Postlab: Each Lab will have an accompanying Pre/Post-lab, due the midnight before the lab which will be submitted online through Canvas. These will contain questions to get you thinking about the new material, quiz whether you have read the lab manual, and review the main points from the previous Lab. Worksheet/Report/Presentation/Practical Exam: After each experiment, your group will be required to turn in a product which demonstrates your understanding of the experiment: Worksheets and Reports are written as a group. The writing requirements are clearly delineated for each person based on assigned roles. Only one group member needs to submit the document and you are encouraged to reference your groupmates work in your answers. A group member’s poor answers will have minimal impact on your personal grade. Completing your groupmates report/worksheet sections is strictly forbidden and will punished as “Cheating” for everyone involved. Presentation will be given as a group. You will have 5 minutes to present the results from an experiment to the class. All group members are required to participate. Penalties will be assessed to individuals who are unable to remain engaged (cell phones are the worst problem) or individuals who cannot maintain a professional attitude during the experiment.

Schedule: To keep all sections of the lab in line with each other, the proposed schedule will be followed: DATE Aug 26-29 Sept 2-5 Sept 9-12 Sept 16-19 Sept 23-26 Sept 30 – Oct 3 Oct 7-10 Oct 14-17 Oct 21-26 Oct 28-31 Nov 4-7 Nov 11-14 Nov 18-21 Nov 25-28 Dec 2-5 Dec 9-12

Safety sheet for Introductory Physics Labs The equipment used in the Introductory Physics Labs has been designed and chosen with the students’ safety in mind. However, any time a large number of people are using equipment, rare and unusual accidents occur and we want to minimize the damage which occurs in such instances. Therefore, there are a few simple rules we need everyone in the lab to observe. 1) Everyone is expected to use good judgment. This covers a long list of (hopefully) obvious rules: a. Never lick any piece of equipment. b. Never throw anything in lab (unless explicitly told otherwise). c. Never aim a projectile launcher at a person, especially your own face. d. Never aim a laser in anyone’s eye. e. …. 2) Students should never be left alone in the Introductory Physics Labs without a TA or Instructor present. 3) Students should wear closed toe shoes to protect the feet from dropped equipment. Also, clothing should be chosen to allow for a reasonable range of movement including walking, bending to the ground, reaching over tables, etc. 4) Liquids should never be on the lab bench because of computers or other electrical equipment. 5) If something looks or feels hot, or is smoking, unplug it and then immediately send a group member to notify the instructor. One person should continue to watch the item in question, just in case it catches fire. 6) If at any time you feel something is unsafe, please notify the instructor to correct the problem and/or address your concerns. 7) All accidents, injuries, and broken equipment should be reported to the instructor immediately. Broken equipment should be placed in a box labeled “Broken Equipment” at the front/side of the room to be evaluated by the instructor. After reading the above rules, please print and sign your name, also provide the date. A copy of this document may be found on Canvas. Printed Name:_____________________________
