Description

Physical Development Activity: Simon Says Objective: Students will learn how to play Simon Says. Students will practice gross motor skills such as standing on one foot, hopping in place, touching their toes, etc. Students will also practice listening skills by following instructions carefully to stay in the game.

Materials and Requirements: No materials are needed but to play this game you will need an open space large enough for the class to spread out and stand in.

1. Find an open space and ask all the children to stand up in it. This space can be inside or outside. Students should be spread out enough that they can all hold their arms out straight from their bodies without touching anyone else. This ensures each child has enough space to move and follow game commands safely. 2. Stand in front of the group and make sure all students are facing you. 3. Explain the rules of Simon Says to the class which are as follows: a. You (the teacher) will give commands to the class such as, “Simon says, touch your toes”. b. Students should only follow the command if it starts with “Simon Says”. If you say “Touch your toes” and students follow the command, they are out of the game. You should switch up the commands between using “Simon Says” and not using it. This requires students to listen closely and follow directions so that they can stay in the game. c. The goal of the game is for the students to stay in it as long as they can. The last player in wins the game, and students get out either by failing to follow “Simon Says” requests, or by following requests that don’t include “Simon Says” in the beginning. 4.

a. Your commands should only include those that allow students to stay in place. Commands should require students to move their bodies and work on gross motor skills. Examples of appropriate commands are below: i.

Jump in place

ii.

Touch your toes

iii.

Spin in circles

iv.

Reach your arms above your head

v.

Sit down

vi.

Stand up

vii.

Wiggle your body

viii.

Stand on one leg

b. If this is your class’s first time playing the game, you should do a few practice runs to allow them to learn and get used to the rules. If you feel that the game needs to be more challenging, you can speed up your commands to make it a little more difficult. c.
