DIABLO VALLEY COLLEGE – BIOSCI 140 INSTRUCTOR: James Hoffmann Electronic Mail: [email protected] Voice Mail: (925) 969-2653 MINIMUM CRITERIA CHECKLIST FOR PHYSIOLOGY PAPER Due the Day of You Turn in Your Paper (DO NOT FILL IN THE SCORE LINE)

Name______________________________ Date___________ Length__________ Score__________ ____ Topic Selection. Your selected topic for the physiology paper is appropriate and is related to physiology in some way. ____ Paper Format. Uses appropriate general paper format. You select how you want to do it. Follow the formatting you have used in other courses – worry about the content of this paper, not the formatting. ____ Paper Length. Paper should be six pages minimum in length for TEXT – double spaced, normal font, normal margins (pictures, tables, figures and references do not count). ____ Subject Knowledge. Paper should demonstrate knowledge and command of the selected topic. It should explain how the topic follows the general concept of being related to physiology in some way. ____ Referencing System. This is a college science class – please use an appropriate referencing system (again, it’s your choice on what specific format you use for this, but you must have one). ____ Due Date. Paper due for EVERYONE the scheduled first day of presentations on the syllabus for your laboratory. TOPIC SELECTION Your physiology paper should cover a topic related to physiology. You do not have to get your topic approved by your instructor. The topic should address, a specific aspect of human physiology. This could be any topic within the realm of physiology. In the past, students have presented on a large variety of topics such as marathon running, infections transmitted by caregivers, a career as a flight nurse and the physiological effects of lightning strikes. While you do not have to stick with one of these areas, the more common topics deal with diseases, activities, careers and microbiology. Your topic can be research orientated, anecdotal, experiential, or any combination. Probably the most important consideration you should use in selecting a topic is choosing one that is either interesting to you, easy for you or ideally both. The major reason for this is that you will be spending time researching your topic. While choosing a topic, students will often modify their choice many times before landing on a specific idea based on their initial research. One important consideration is your paper length. As noted above, the length of the paper is a minimum of six pages, so you need to select a topic that can meet that length requirement. This often means that your paper will end up having a very narrow and specific focus, or will be an extremely broad overview of a topic. Either one is fine, but you should decide early, so you spend time working on the areas that will be included in your paper. In addition, do not feel that you need to communicate all of the information on the topic in your paper as you get the select the exact topic. RESEARCH REQUIREMENTS I expect all students to do some research on the topic. I am not requiring a specific number of sources, but you should do more than a cursory review of the topic. If applicable, experimental data can be included as well. In order to research your topic adequately, you may need to go to the library, but you can likely find enough information on the Internet for your project. Make sure that you keep updated records of your sources as you search (especially on the Internet) as you will be required to submit a bibliography or reference list with proper citations within the text of the paper. You can use any referencing system that you like and find the easiest to use (APA, MLA, Chicago or any other style you are familiar with are some of the viable options). FORMATTING The paper can be presented in any format that you are comfortable with from other experiences. While not a requirement, some will be in journal format using either an experimental investigation style or review article style depending on the chosen topic. Besides text, you can include tables and figures if you deem it is appropriate. The paper should be at least six pages in length of text when normal margins (about one inch), normal font (10-12 point Arial, Times New Roman or similar font) and double spacing are used. The length requirements refer to the TEXT section only of the paper, not tables, figures, title pages or references. It is often helpful to title each section for the reader, as it makes the paper much easier to navigate for the reader,

but it is not a requirement. As far as the referencing system is concerned, as mentioned above, any standard format is acceptable. ADVICE It’s not too early to start, so get your topic in line and start your research in a timely fashion. It generally takes two to three times longer to complete this than most students originally think. As always, if you have questions or need help, ASK! SCORING This paper is worth 15 points maximum. If you hit all of the minimum criteria, you should get all possible points. However, if you do not meet the minimum standards, points will be deducted from your total score. For purposes of scoring, assume the minimum criteria was met unless otherwise noted on the paper.
